Since cancer appears to run in their family, I wouldn’t be surprised if this may stem from a BRCA gene mutation - which is more common in Ashkenazi Jews (of East European ancestry) than in the general population. Runs in my family.
This is an inheritable genetic profile that results in the body’s reduced ability to combat tumor cells, which therefore increases the risk of malignant growths that remain unchecked by one’s normal immune response.
Here’s a Star Trek tidbit for fans: There are two other TV series cast members (of the original seven) with a similar East European Jewish family background… Leonard Nimoy and Walter Koenig.
