Keyboard & Mouse or Controller - How Do You Game?

I just can’t game with a keyboard and Mouse. I’ve tried many times with little to no success. I’m NOT a good typist, I never have been. I’m always looking at the keyboard. With timing so important, knowing where each key is without looking is crucial. And that ain’t me. And don’t get me started on the mouse.

When browsing for interesting controller supports games, I often find myself looking here. Or better yet…

So as far as I’m concerned, for PC gaming…

Honestly I would suggest learning to type. I took a course years ago back when I thought I wanted to do the college route. There are probably plenty of online courses that you can do for free.

Typing was probably the most valuable thing secondary education taught me. It’s a skill I use many hours every single day.

As far as games are concerned @UncleSpellbinder, I use both. It generally just depends on the game. I didn’t grow up with a console though, so FPS type stuff feels more natural with keyboard and mouse for me.

however to answer the original question I would say this:
Use what you have the most FUN using. After all that is why your playing games is to have fun.

I use mouse and keyboard for gaming.

Does this come from you recently buying Detroit Become Human a while ago? The quick time events on that game are pain on normal, even I have difficulty doing them as that game places quite a variety against you with less than a second between keys sometimes and I suck at doing them on that specific game.

I use keyboard and mouse for everything, one of my favorite parts of moving from consoles about 15 years ago. Some game genres such as strategy games are worse on a controller, and I like playing shooting games with a mouse as I control the speed of movement while, at least the last time I used a controller, moving the gun or view is fixed to the maximum speed of the joystick (On the other hand the keyboard keys cannot vary speed levels like the joystick can which can be a pain for some games). Sometimes it depends on the game though and keyboard isn’t as important for some games, racing games are usually not too great on keyboard.

But I guess I am just used to keyboard and mouse though. That being said there are quite a few people who play controller on a PC simply as it feels more comfortable to play games with them, which is fair enough. But both kind of have pros and cons, if I played more games where controller was better (for me) i would probably switch between keyboard and mouse and a controller depending on what works best.

I am a keyboard gamer, but I remember a (long) while back, there was a competition, professional/top level keyboard gamers vs. Controller, the controller gamers wiped the floor

Can’t remember which games etc. I have a controller and as you look at the keyboard, I generally toss the controller across the room

I use keyboard and mouse for the most part, sometimes PS4 controller. I tried the PS5 controller for a while, but its just so big and chunky. Because of the rise of ps4 controller prices, I’m buying used ones and learning to replace parts myself.

As others have said, typing on a keyboard is a good skill to have. I started programming when i was 14 and i am turning 29 this year. That should give you a pointer as to much I’ve used a keyboard.

All you really need to do to get better at using the keyboard is to just type stuff, a lot more than you do now. I suggest trying out those typing tests to measure your typing speed.

Keyboard and mouse, always.

Just learned it that way. I am a real pc-player, not that weird consolero type .

I sure believe I can handle controller as well, but why should I? Keyboard and mouse just works and offers more flexibility.

Started out gaming on dumb terminals. Eventually gamed on consoles. Now I game exclusively on mouse+keyboard.

BUT (and it’s a big but  ) I don’t play games that live or die by reaction times. Yeah, I’ve got a couple FPS but I play them on the easiest, story-based mode I can find. Same with all other games. I game for fun and relaxation, not frustration.

USB, play whatever way brings you the most enjoyment. No shame in that game.

Not particularly. I still play it. It’s doable for me, but the learning curve was/is a bit steep for me.

I get that. But I’ve gone through my 61 years just fine without. I’m not, nor have I ever been, a programmer. Or a writer, or some other profession/hobbyist in which typing speed and accuracy are necessary.

Well, some FPS/3PS games do have controller support. Arc Raiders, for example, features native, full controller support. Players may need to enable “Steam Input” in the game’s properties for it to detect the controller.

Indeed. Whether keyboard/mouse or controller, whatever makes you happy and gives you the most enjoyment.

As a sidenote, I suspect that with the growing popularity of the Steamdeck (and other handhelds that use Steam), games that have controller compatibility will grow as well.

Oh right, I see. The only reason I thought of that game was when you mentioned looking at the keyboard and timing and I remembered you bought Detroit become human in the sale recently and instantly reminded me when I played it the first time a year ago and kept messing up the key presses on the fight segments, it’s the only game I have with quick time events like that so it threw me off a bit with it’s 10+ possible keys and mouse movements. But I was too stubborn to reduce difficulty to reduce the variety of keys that appear.

When it comes to games such as Cyberpunk 2077, Kingdom Come Deliverance 1+2, and so on, I play with a mouse and keyboard (because I find it much easier to aim, for example).

For games like The Witcher 3 and Stellar Blade, I tend to use a controller because the controls are much better (for me) than with a mouse and keyboard (some of the key assignments are terrible).
