Kernel update broke Xorg... when should I be safe?

The recent linux update to 5.14.15 broke my Xorg and I wasn’t able to do anything, not even get a TTY. I had to chroot into the system and downgrade to the pre-update linux packages (5.14.14) and got everything back. I was wondering if there’s anything I could do to update my packages in the future or just never update anything again?

So you only had to downgrade the kernel, nothing else? I’m running the latest, but with an Nvidia card, and not suffering any issues. You may want to install another kernel branch - I use the LTS kernel as my backup - just in case this happens again.

For the time being, if you don’t already have it installed, I would encourage you to use the LTS kernel.

Install LTS kernel: open your favorite terminal -

sudo pacman -S linux-lts

sudo pacman -S linux-lts-headers

OR you can also use the EndeavourOS app AKM to install kernels easily via a GUI, just make sure you select/check two options, the core/linux-lts AND core/linux-lts-headers then click execute, let it run till finished, then reboot into LTS kernel by selecting it from the Grub menu during boot.

The 5.15 kernel, which is also an LTS release, was just released, so will be out soon, so for now I would hang on to the current LTS kernel (5.10.x) and wait till the new release for 5.15 comes out and test that and see if it still breaks Xorg or not.

For now, I would simply run the 5.10.x LTS kernel, and keep an eye on the next time you see a 5.14.x update. If there’s a new update to the 5.14 kernel in the coming days or maybe a week, I’d update to that latest one and see if they fixed this issue. Since you’re not the only one, it’s probably a regression that got in the latest build, but should be fixed by the next update, hopefully of course.

If it were my system, I’d use the LTS kernel by default, and keep the mainline kernel up to date and just test it out every so often to see if it works well with my system or not.

Side note, if you have the mainline and LTS kernel installed, the system will always default to selecting the LTS kernel. But if you are like me and prefer to have it remember the last saved used kernel every boot, feel free to follow this guide here:

@jonathon just added 5.10 lts kernel to the kernel-lts repo. May come in handy as the linux-lts package will be bumped from 5.10 to 5.15 soon.

If you want to stay on 5.10 longer term this is the best way, not to simply stop updating.

It’s a few weeks away yet - 5.16 has to be released first, then 5.15 will become linux-lts. linux-lts510 is more of a placeholder for now.

I guess theoretically you could heat just install and never update anything ever again.

Eventually anything internet related will start to fail, and you’ll never get security updates and you won’t be able to install new software since it will always be based on things that no longer exist in Arch.

Debian may be better suited for you. They just updated to 5.10 and will be there for the next 2 years.

As mentioned above, just install the LTS kernel (sudo pacman -S linux-lts linux-lts-headers).

Even if you continue to use the mainline kernel later, it’s good to have LTS installed as a backup, for situations like these, so you don’t need to downgrade anything.

Thank you, I’ll do that. I think I’ll stick to the LTS kernel but I’ll keep testing the newest kernel to look out for a fix if any

For everyone interested, I was able to solve the problem in the latest kernel (running 5.14.16) by setting iommu=pt.
I was trying stuff randomly and this seems to work idk I’ve needed a win in my personal life so this made me really happy
