Kernel panic, can't boot due to no bootloader in BIOS

Hello. I have a severe issue. I was using my computer yesterday and ran into a kernel panic blue screen, the system asked to be shut down. No I did not take a picture, yes that was a mistake. It said something about trying to kill init and that was that. I was aware that crashes could happen and decided maybe if I roll back some updates everything will be ok. The problem came later.

I could not find the bootloader in bios. No way around it, I tried unplugging and replugging the drive where the distro is, maybe something was wrong with my BIOS for some reason (nope, secure boot disabled, CSM disabled, no fast boot). I have entered with a liveusb and can see my files, everything is still there, including the boot partition. Everything looks normal, but in startup I don’t get a linux option.

Worth saying that I use Windows as well, dual boot (for games I can’t play on Linux). I tried searching through the system.journal in my @log folder but I could not see any kernel panic logs with grep.

This has happened before. I guess this is why people have fallbacks (I did as well) but I am not sure the bootloader is expected to nuke itself (mind you the files are there, it just doesn’t load.

These are the contents of bootctl (using the path of my /efi directory)

I wonder if you were to arch-chroot on the live ISO and then update.

Sorry I donΒ΄t get the suggestion… update what exactly? the BIOS is updated, I updated it like a month ago or less. Also I don’t know what you mean by arch-chroot on the live ISO, since that would apply to the one on the stick, as far as I know…

Think he means this.
https://discovery.endeavouros.com/system-rescue/arch-chroot/2022/12/

Your output shows older files and kernel. So my suggestion is to boot on the live ISO and arch-chroot into the installed system and try updating so you have all the latest updates including kernels which will rebuild the initramfs when it updates hopefully resolving your issue.

Thank you so much. I can’t do that at this very moment but I will try that in a while. Hope this helps… Any recommendations? Before crashing, maybe that morning I checked and no updates were pending, with yay -S. Will arch-chroot as soon as I can and send my results.

Not sure if this is a typo but yay -S is only used to install something , just typing yay should give you updates if there are any.
You can also use

eos-update --aur

I correct myself, yay itself, the equivalent of pacman -Syu

I did the arch-chroot. I updated using first eos-update and then eos-update --aur. Both worked, but still no entry in BIOS. What else can I do?

It may be worth adding that I use BTRFS, so the chroot had me doing some special mounting (sudo mount /dev/sdb2 /mnt -o subvol=@)

I don’t know if that may or may not change something

I also use btrfs and you have to mount it slightly differently.

Are you using grub as the bootloader?

systemd-boot

Okay …so does it boot and you can go into windows only? Or you are not dual booting?

Windows only. When I enter BIOS, only the windows boot entry is there. Linux used to appear there

I’m going to have to let someone that has more knowledge with systemd-boot help you. I use mostly grub myself and only use systemd-boot on one device.

Edit: Maybe this helps.

Thank you for your willingness to help. I read the systemd-boot wiki. If the answer is there I still lack the knowledge to find it tbh. Will give it a second read. Thank you for letting someone else know. If I can’t get it to work I will just switch to grub since I believe there is a quicker fix there (from what I have read). Hopefully there is a way out.

I use grub also because if you are using btrfs and you want to be able to boot on a previous snap shot you can’t using systemd-boot. I use grub on btrfs with btrfs-assistant, snapper-support and btrfs-maintenance.

Wait this is important, I don’t know how I missed something that big. In that case I want to use grub (snapshots are the main part of me wanting to use btrfs, to revert any major F-ups I may do). Is there a way to change systemd for grub?
