Kernel freeze after opening Nautilus (6.0.16.hardened1-1) (post-upgrade of packages)

Following an upgrade of packages this evening, my kernel freezes after:

A) Logging into my desktop environment, waiting a little bit (a minute or so), and then opening Nautilus
B) Logging into my desktop environment, open Nautilus immediately (succeeds), and then waiting about a minute (freeze happens)

I don’t see anything out of the ordinary in journalctl or dmesg. I also tried checking my journal from another machine as the freeze occurred (ssh <host> journalctl -f); however, nothing gets written to the log. I tried the magic SysRq keys (REISUB) but nothing happens.

I do not experience the freeze when I switch from the upgraded kernel (6.0.16.hardened1-1) to my fallback kernel (6.1.2-arch1-1).

I’d like to assume that any and all packages coming from Arch Linux are for the latest Linux kernel. But this is just me.

Some of them could run on older kernels but there’s no guarantee about it for any rolling release distro.

Both the hardened (where the freeze occurs) and fallback kernel are the latest versions for their branches, and, I am running the latest packages for both (e.g. if I run pacman -Syu I receive ... is up to date. there is nothing to do).

Have you tried to downgrade your hardened kernel and see if the issue is related to the update to the kernel itself?

I’m not using Endeavour OS. I’m using Fedora on a Steam Deck, and I’ve the same problem using the same kernel 6.0.16. Every time I try to run nautilus, system gets frozen.

I created a clean user and started nautilus with that kernel version and no problem at all, but the old user continues to freeze.

If I use a previous kernel, then the error vanishes in the old user.

I even tried to remove all nautilus references on my home, in .config/ and .local/share/ but no luck.

Seems it is some sort of combination between kernel 6.0.16 and some specific nautilus settings that make this bug to appear.

Not looking for support as I’m not on Endeavour OS but just wanted to put some useful info in the thread.

This may be resolved in 6.0.18-hardened1-1-hardened. I am able to open Nautilus without a freeze.

I can confirm in version 6.0.18 the problem was fixed for me also in Fedora. Seems the 6.0.16 kernel introduced a regression or an error of some kind.

Confirmed as well. No more issues :slight_smile:
