While this does not solve your problem, it is still important to note: never hard-reset your computer unless it is absolutely necessary (it almost never is). Consider enabling the magic SysRq key and use that to reset:

The Linux kernel authors have provided a very nice feature of issuing low-level commands to the kernel directly, regardless of the state the system is in.
