I updated my AMD laptop today (AMD, no Intel/Nvidia) and encountered the issue. On login, KDE desktop crashes and loads a few times before finally giving up.

System logs show a plasmashell segfault in libQt6Qml.so.6.9.1.

In my case, I was able to resolve the issue by setting my Plasma rendering backend to the default (“Automatic”). I had set it to “Software” to address GPU memory consumption issues, impacting some applications.

I reverted the Renderer to it’s default by:

  1. Editing ~/.config/kdeglobals.
  2. Removed this section entirely:
[QtQuickRendererSettings]
SceneGraphBackend=software
  1. Save and reboot.
