My Kbibtex won’t display PDFs, it complains that I need a version of Okular for KDE Frameworks 5 and that Okular for KDE Frameworks 4 will not work.
My Okular version is 25.04.3, which I’m fairly certain is almost the latest and so should be for KDE Frameworks 5 (or above).
Does anyone know why it won’t work?
Not quite then…
Still, on KDE Frameworks 5 for sure, yes?
@Ephemera , the current KDE Frameworks version is 6.17.0
Well I had to check if this wasn’t some old topic, because by a long stretch we are at framework 6 now. Makes me wonder when was your last update ?

Or kbibtex is very out of date. It’s not installed on computer and I installed the KDE Applications meta package.
A quick package search shows that kbibtex-git in the AUR is the Qt6 version.
Last update just a few weeks ago kbibtex is on version 1:0.10.0-7, arch packages has the latest version as 1:0.10.0-8.
Sounds like it’s time to run yay. A lot of updates have been available over the last several weeks.

Those changes are made after the kbibtex in the extra repository, you can see that by the version numbers. You need the aur one as far as I can tell.
okularpart5 is listed as an optional dependency of kbibtex:
If you don’t want to use the AUR’s -git version of kbibtex (personally, I wouldn’t), installing okularpart5 will probably solve your issue.

Simpler solution
Yes…assuming it does fix the issue.
Ephemera:
Thanks. I’ll try that.
Just a friendly reminder to update the system before installing.

Problem persists. I now have okularpart5 Version: 23.08.5-3 with kbibtex Version: 1:0.10.0-7 and okular Version: 25.08.0-1.
I still get the error that I need to instal okular for KDE Frameworks 5. It’s saying that Okular for KDE Frameworks 4 won’t work, but I don’t have Okular for KDE Frameworks 4.
Is there some other setting I need to change? Nothing in the Kbibtex’s own setting seems to relate?
What’s odd is that Kbibtex has no problem opening a PDF (with Okular), so it knows what to do with a PDF. It can also search attached PDFs for specific text. It’s just the preview.
I don’t know, I’ve never used kbibtex.
I don’t see any bug reports about this.
Can you post the complete text (or a screenshot) of the error message?
The full text is
Don’t know how to show mimetype ‘application/pdf’.
Please install Okular for KDE Frameworks 5 to make use of its PDF viewing component.
Okular for KDE 4 will not work.
I’ve checked in my file associations and Okular is slected for PDFs as well as Okularpart selected for embedded PDFs.
I’ve checked my installation to make sure I only have the latest versions of both (not that I know how two versions would have been possible).
I’ve checked the config, rc, and other dot files for both kbibtex, and okular, an okularpart. None have any settings relating to the document preview.
Maybe time to file it as a bug?

That sounds like a good idea. You can file a bug report at the kde bugtracker:
