Joining the Matrix community

During the recent EndeavourOS hosting outage, I thought to check-in with what was happening via the Matrix community. I’d never used Matrix before, but I got Element installed, created a Matrix account and found the EndeavourOS group.

However, when it came to hitting “Join the discussion”, I’m told I’m not invited to the room :sob:

a man is walking on a dirt field with the words `` okay then '' written on the ground .

Perhaps this is a rookie mistake… is there something I’m missing?

@ringo’s answer in another thread finally got me in.

I had Element open, and then followed Ringo’s link and bam, I was able to join the party

it is a portal technically on the frontdoor, meaning of portal is to introduce

invitation is after.

that is a capsule summary of most of my romantic life…

To clarify for others having the same issue, the “portal” @ringo is referring to is a lobby. Here, you can request an invite into the main EndeavourOS room, once the admins are satisfied you’re not a bot.

So the sequence for me was:

  1. Open my Matrix client.
  2. Open this link in my web browser: https://matrix.to/#/%23Endeavouros:matrix.org
  3. Hit “Continue”, then find your app (Element in my case) and hit “Continue” again.
  4. The EndeavourOS “portal” (lobby) will load in your Matrix client and you should be able to join it.
  5. Ask there for an invitation into the main EndeavourOS room. An invitation will be sent to you from the main EndeavourOS room in the Matrix client.
