Is using multiple monitors with different resolutions and scaling really a problem on Linux?

So I’m a relatively new Linux/EOS user looking to switch over my main desktop to EOS. I’ve already switched my laptop over but my only hesitation from switching (or at least dual-booting) has been hearing from various Reddit threads and Youtubers talking about difficulty with setting up multiple monitors on Linux when they vary in resolution, refresh rate, scaling, etc.

I currently run a 4k 240Hz monitor with 1.5x scaling and a 1440p 120Hz monitor with 1x scaling. In a modern EOS setup with a current DE like KDE or Gnome would this be an issue at all? From my testing with virtual monitors in Virtualbox it doesn’t really seem to be an issue outside of some weirdness likely attributed to the screens being virtual.

Are these concerns mostly due to older DEs running X11? Anyone use two wildly different monitors just fine, and if so which DE do you run?

Thanks for helping a newbie out!

X11 would seem to be where the comments stem from, and in particular with scaling. Different resolutions and refresh rates is supported. However, if I’m not mistaken the scale is set globally for all displays, not per-display.

Under Wayland, I believe it’s possible to set scaling per-display (under KDE Plasma at least, but likely other Wayland DE’s too).

To confirm under KDE Plasma with Wayland, I have my 1440p Samsung running 240 Hz scaled to 100%, and my 4K LG simultaneously running 60 Hz scaled to 125% / 1.25.

Thank you! Appreciate the response. With this info I will work on dualbooting EOS this weekend.

Thanks again!
