Is it possible to get small help with /etc/default/grub?

I would probably open a new thread to walk you through. Most changes are one liner commands. Grub customizer, well I have seen people posting here sporadically with unbootable system because they didn’t know what customizer did.

From what I can see in an older thread the grub menu is themed already by eos. Don’t know if things have changed since then or not but here is a post about it. Note normally you would just have to change that specific setting in grub config to my understanding and simply edit a text file and run mkconfig to regenerate/update grub configs.

I think none of my threads have ever been so popular… and I wrote How to enable AUR, FLATPAK and SNAP tutorial on Manjaro forum… Well did the first post, then a moderator took that post and made it WAY better.

Just curious, why not try BTRFS Assistant and snapper.
It works like a charm for me. I am snapshotting /home as well.
It is worth it.

I can promise you if you were to try and open that thread here, it will be wildly unpopular lol.

I tried it, can’t figure out how to use it so I just uninstalled it.

I will simply provide the warning that grub customizer tends to hurt more than it helps.

It is a regular occurrence that people come here with grub issues caused by grub customizer. They haven’t really done anything wrong, it is just a flawed concept.

I am happy, no need for customization.

@pebcak it was a decision I made because of Windows, witch I thought I would need more because of Gamging, but Valve made such a great job with proton, that I don’t use windows since jul’22.

@olividir
Yes! I’m new in this forum, but like the approach. Until now I have a really good feeling about the community

@limotux
btrfs-assistant and snapper, exactly how I do it and it work wonderfull. @olividir can we somehow help for that problem? (perhaps a new topic)

A wise member of this forum would say: “Your system, Your rule!”
I couldn’t agree more.

But I know that even the mention of dualbooting with the W-OS could stir up the feelings of some sensitive souls

And beware, W-OS might be secretly replacing your kernels with others riddled with Terrible-wares. :skull_and_crossbones:

There is a thread where @dalto helped me a lot.
It is a long thread but this is where I started Btrfs Assistant 1.0 is coming, testers needed - #253 by dalto

Please be careful and read carefully.
This is where I was brand new with BTRFS, maybe I made something wrong, or posted something wrong.

But I am sure you can figure it out.
I will be glad to help though.
Feel free to ask. I will be glad to help or at least share my experience.

UPDATE:
It is mainly about installing BTRFS Assistant, snapper,… but you will need to issue a command to create the configuration. It is all there.

Important: I would suggest (I do this actually) I make a reply in that thread, write the commands I made for documentation and refference purpose, and after installing everything I suggest check with @dalto to make sure Grub is OK and if you need to do anything about Grub.If I were you I would do this.
If you are OK with Grub then it is fine.

But how will this work if Grub can’t save in BTRFS? Then you can enter whatever you want as the kernel to boot, it will always be ignored. Have the same problem and the only consequence I can think of is to work with GRUB_DEFAULT=0 and #GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT=true, so default with nothing to save to it. This then has the consequence that ALWAYS the first kernel in the list, so LTS is booted. Because I also do not like the whole so, I remain for the time being with ext4, until resourceful minds have found a permanent solution.

Setting GRUB_DEFAULT=1 doesn’t require saving. It just boots entry 1.

So it does the same as GRUB_DEFAULT=0?

Well, yes, except that boots entry number 0. 0 is the first entry and 1 is the second.

For me entry 0 is lts-linux, entry 1 is lts-kernel fallback, and endry 2 is linux, entry is linux fallback.
So I chose entry 2.

I’m starting to get confused. If I want the 3rd entry booted (1st Linux LTS, 2nd Linux LTS headers, 3rd Linux, 4th Linux headers), that would be GRUB_DEFAULT=2, right?

Yes. Although, if you have entries for headers in your grub menu, something is very wrong.

Probably fallback entries.

And how do I get them out?
They are present since the new installation of EOS + installation of the LTS kernel. Uninstalling the headers is probably the only solution?

You could “hide” them from showing in Grub boot menu.
Or
You could prevent them from being generated at all.

And how do I do that?
