Is 64g of simms on xps 7590 overkill?

My birthday is coming up and my dear wife asked me to tell her what I’d like. I have 16g of memory in my EndeavourOS-powered Dell XPS 7590 at the moment, and am thinking about asking her for a 64g simm upgrade. Insane, sure, but as this is my linux go-to machine I kinda think “More memory isn’t a bad thing.” Currently I do not demand much at all of it, other than running a virtual android session in it (and probably soon a couple other virtual machine setups). I want to juice it some for music production as well (any ideas along that line?) and perhaps even video production. Anyway, the question being - am I insane for wanting 64g of memory in this thing?

I generally find 32 adequate, but I’m not doing all you might want to do. Being a laptop, it’s not really meant for heavy duty. Would you prefer to save money and invest in more of a powerhouse (likely a desktop)? Just asking for thought’s sake.

I don’t know about your machine details, but does it support 64GB RAM?
Anyway, I’d say 64GB isn’t too much, virtual machines need their share too.
Also, 64GB will make the machine useful and feel “quicker” for a longer time.

This is a Dell XPS, they can handle more heavy-duty tasks like video and music editing, depending on the configuration.

@chromebook77 Which CPU does it have onboard, is it the i5, i7 or i9?

As Bryanpwo notes, even though a few years old now, this is a powerful laptop for creatives and mine also has the 4k oled screen. Which is pretty sweet, I must say. I do think the virtual machines are fun and on top of that want to break away from MacOS creatively. To do so would require me to get a $$ video suite for linux (or use Kdenlive). I’m less acquainted w/ what linux offers musically in parallel to Apple’s formidable music apps but would surely like to find out. I spent $340 on this machine used, and it seems well worth it. Another 90 bucks or so for a 64g memory sticks isn’t too outlandish… just frivolous if I don’t need it. But maybe that’s fine, too. Eye roll.

I have a laptop with 8G memory. I wish it had 16.
I have another with with 16. I wish it had 32.
Alas, both are non-upgradable.
I have a desktop with 32G. I like it to have 64 but I am content with it. It is upgradable so perhaps that is why.

The morale of the story? Perhaps, the more you have, the more you desire
So go with 64G

I have 64GB in my desktop and sometimes wish I had more.

For me, that is almost entirely due to how many VMs I tend to run though.

I got an i7 and at the time was kinda envious of the i9. Later on, after reading folks’ experiences w/ the 7590, I’m extremely glad I got the i7. The i9 runs very hot and also, according to various owners’ complaints, throttles a lot because of it. The i7 is comfy in my lap. And in Endeavour this machine runs cooler than Windows.

You have the right configuration for this machine. A friend of mine had the i9 and video editing took longer due to throttling.
As an answer to your RAM question, upgrade it to your wish and vision. Your machine still has miles and power in it to make it worth.

I had 64 in my gaming laptop.

I’ve got 32 in everything I use now and I’m content. I don’t use my computer for much other than fun, vm’s, gaming etc.

64 is not over kill. Go 128 if you can. You can always use a little, you can never use more than you have.
