Inxi -Fxxx Strange Locale Settings

I am having a strange output as follows:

I tried many things including unhashing and hashing in

[limo@limo ~]$ sudo nano /etc/locale.gen

and I did:

[limo@limo ~]$ sudo locale-gen

What might be going wrong?
I don’t know where did the locale “en_AG” come from? Apperade during installation but I changed to en_US!

P.S: opening the file with kate from command line I noticed

[limo@limo ~]$ kate /etc/locale.gen
kf.sonnet.core: Sonnet: No speller backends available!
kf.sonnet.core: No language dictionaries for the language: "en_US"

and lots of messages (repeated many times)

kf.sonnet.core: No language dictionaries for the language: "en_US"

Is it OK to leave it like this? I don’t think so!
Any advice guys?

Hello @limotux,

this looks like a perl problem. Test this:

locale-gen en_US.UTF-8

or you can take this

localedef -i en_US -f UTF-8 en_US.UTF-8

This fix is from a “Debian” Site… Sorry for my bad english

Look at the end of your /etc/locale.gen, and you will see that the Calamares installer has enabled en_US.UTF-8 and en_AG UTF-8; that’s where en_AG UTF-8 comes from:

Those are “uncommented” and therefore used.

For this:

kf.sonnet.core: Sonnet: No speller backends available!
kf.sonnet.core: No language dictionaries for the language: "en_US"

It’s just telling you that you don’t have a spellcheck dictionary installed. Install the hunspell-en_us package.

Did you see my post above?

Comment out the en_AG UTF-8 entry (put a # sign in front of it) that’s at the end of your /etc/locale.gen and then regenerate your locale with sudo locale-gen.

And then install a spelling dictionary for the other issue you reported.

Also, I’m not sure why you uncommented en_US ISO-8859-1 in addition to en_US.UTF-8. The en_US.UTF-8 entry should cover everything you need, so unless you have a specific reason for enabling the ISO version, you probably don’t need it.

Well, this is odd, since the regeneration of locale-gen should have removed en_AG.

Can you post your full /etc/locale.gen file again, please?

This setting is either from /etc/locale.conf contents, or from user/local DE relevant settings.
locale-gen just installs the data and does not change the settings.

Make sure you have the hunspell package installed - I had assumed it was a hard dependency of hunspell-en_us but I see that it is an optional dependency, so you might be missing it. hunspell is the actual spellchecking application.

You might also try installing aspell and the aspell-en dictionary. aspell is another spell checker which is, like hunspell, an optional dependency for sonnet.

I see that aspell is an optional dependency for perl - “to import old dictionaries.”

I have both hunspell and aspell installed on my system, and I do not see the warnings that you are getting.

Also, remember that warnings are not necessarily problematic - here, you are being informed that sonnet is not finding something that it is looking for, but if spellchecking works with hunspell then there is no real problem.

I doublechecked your recomendations and installed them.
Now spelling check is actually working in Zim Notes, which was my main target.
So, it is fine with me, so I will mark it solved (for now) Why for now? Because I believe Linux in general and EOS in particular is a wonderful and perfect system, so I do not take anything reporting any problem. Plus I am a perfectionist by nature as much as I can - unfortunately.

Can it be because I am not in US and trying to use US locales?

Should I edit something in “/etc/profile.d/locale.sh”

No. This is only for troubleshooting and should normally be unset. If we don’t solve it with proper plasma and system locale settings, we may use it.
