Installing PlayOnLinux

Greetings. This app has disappeared from the Arch repo. I can build it with the tar.gz file, but I get a python error when I try to run the build script. I installed Python 3.13.3, but the script skips over it. Do I need to install a 2.x version of Python? Here is the terminal output:

[adam@AJB-ENDEAVOUR playonlinux]$ ./playonlinux
Looking for python… 3.13.3 - skipped
Looking for python2.7… which: no python2.7 in (/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/bin/site_perl:/usr/bin/vendor_perl:/usr/bin/core_perl)

Looking for python2.6… which: no python2.6 in (/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/bin/site_perl:/usr/bin/vendor_perl:/usr/bin/core_perl)

Looking for python2… which: no python2 in (/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/bin/site_perl:/usr/bin/vendor_perl:/usr/bin/core_perl)

Please install python before trying to run this program
[adam@AJB-ENDEAVOUR playonlinux]$

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Adam

I’m not a gamer so I don’t really know, but the PlayOnLinux AUR page says:

Maybe just try

yay -Syu playonlinux

(Hope I got the command right out of my head.)

Thanks. I tried yay as well. No joy. I’m not a gamer either. I use playon primarily to run a few windoze only tools for network equipment and WinAmp. My laptop is dual boot with Mint and PlayOnLinux runs fine there. I’ve only had EOS on for about a week. So far, I like it. There was a bit of a learning curve with pacman, but it’s a great package manager once you get the hang of it. Thorough and very fast.

Perhaps if you post the output and describe what didn’t work, someone could help you out.

Thanks. Perhaps if you read the OP you’ll see the terminal output.

I did. But that is not when you used YAY

was it ?

True that.

I got it running. Running yay with sudo is a on-no. Newbie mistake. My first week with EOS.

What are you wanting to run with it, maybe there is a better alternative?

PlayOnLinux isn’t maintained anymore, if I’m right. Maybe you should try Bottles. With Bottles you also are able to install Windows Apps.

Bottles is also available in AUR for installation. Just try it.

Thanks. I got PlayOn running. I’ll give bottles a try in a VM.

While not officially dead, PlayOnLinux’s active development has significantly slowed down, and newer alternatives like Lutris, Bottles, and Heroic have gained popularity. PlayOnLinux is still functional and used by some, but its active development and community support are less robust than in the past.
