In Praise of LibreOffice

Solid review of the newest LibreOffice. Whether you’re on Windows, MacOS, or Linux… Libre Office is top notch. At least IMHO. I’ve been using it regularly for YEARS, and I swear by it. No intention in moving elsewhere.

I write, create columns occasionally, tables sometimes, text box/picture box, insert pics etc.

I prefer Apache Open office for my simpleton needs. Only use word processor mostly. This suite has about 1/4 of the buttons that Libre has. Apache has a bad habit of being abandoned with no updates a lot over the last decade so too insecure for me.

Tried OnlyOffice it was cute, but not for the long haul.

Since 2017 (the year of walking away from Win) I’d have to say I use Libre the most due to dependability. It has twice the bells and whistles as MSOffice and I feel like a bigger putz using Libre than Office—something about 1,000 buttons and features I will never use in my lifetime really is esteem-challenging especially when you only know how to use about 50 buttons…

LOVE/LOATHE for me. Always use it but Mucho Mas for my simple self.
I trust it because it’s apparent it’s a well-nourished, well-donated to. well-cared for piece of Office Software. And it’s never let me down.
I too, have to praise it.

Meh… OnlyOffice is better!
I have tried Libre several times but it just sucks.
I can’t stand the dumb UI.

I can’t use it. It doesn’t format close enough to the office stuff I need to use at work. Only office is seamless, no one complains about broken formatting anymore.

I want to like it. It causes more work every time I try though.

I don’t have those issues with LibreOffice, probably because I’m a casual user and nothing is work-critical. I might just revisit OnlyOffice, though. I haven’t used it in years.

I’m using SoftMaker Office NX. I don’t like all the other Offices.

Same here. It’s fine for my needs and use.

I agree . . . . I’m also a casual user. . . . . if you’ve got complaints go back and give ms-office a spin for the ‘money’. . . .maybe then you’ll stop complaining. LibreOffice works for me . . . . so does Librecad.

Rich

It still irks me how Microsoft poisoned the file formats standards compliance certifications with their own wrapper which was compatible, but not fully compatible, once again choosing to stand on the wrong side of history. LibreOffice has been my go to for years, - it’s not perfect, but it does an incredible amount with a fraction of Microsoft’s budget.

The good thing is that open document formats are being actively chosen for many governmental bodies, especially in the EU.

I’m an IP attorney in the US. Been using LibreOffice exclusively since 2007. It has handled everything I’ve ever thrown at it. Never had an issue exchanging documents with clients, or filing with governmental agencies/ courts. I’m a big fan … frankly, I’d be lost without it.
