I3 installation on EndeavourOS / off line installed

Hi guys.

I’m a new EndeavourOS users and would like to know if there is a way to install I3 from my new installation xfce environment. Some how, when I installed Endeavour with the online option and I3 selection, it doesn’t work well on my machine. I got the login screen but after the installation but when I logon black screen… So, I installed the offline version and everything goes well. From now,I would like to install i3 to my new Endeavour installation hoping that will work.
Thanks guys for your advices.

Hi! Welcome to the forum  :enos_flag:

This is the repository where the i3 configuration resides

Run the following commands to download dotfiles and copy them.

git clone https://github.com/endeavouros-team/endeavouros-i3wm-setup.git

cd endeavouros-i3wm-setup

sudo pacman -S --needed - < packages-repository.txt

cp -R .config/* ~/.config/

chmod -R +x ~/.config/i3/scripts (make scripts executable)

dbus-launch dconf load / < xed.dconf (setup xed-editor)

Please note : Existing dotfiles, if any, will be rewritten. Make sure you have a backup before proceeding.

Thank you very much for your helping hands.
I will follow the instructions guide.

Thank you very much for all the information.
Will read it all and try to install.

Hi Flyingcakes.
Would you please explain to me this line

sudo pacman -S --needed - < packages-repository.tx>
I tried this sudo packman -S pakages-repository.txt with no succes.
not sure that I do the good things here.

Thanks again,

Make sure you type the command correctly. packman → pacman. Also, there is a dash after -S

I suggest you copy paste the commands (in order) from my earlier post, into your terminal and run. You can paste in your terminal using ctrl + shift + v.

sudo pacman -S --needed - < packages-repository.txt

In case you want to know what this command does - It installs the required packages used for i3 edition. There is a text file called package-repository.txt. This contains list of packages. Pacman will install them if you run the command.

Alright flyingcakes,

I did the installation. I got some warning… kind of
warning: network-manager-applet-1.22.0-1 is up to date – skipping
warning: polkit-gnome-0.105-8 is up to date – skipping
warning: xdg-user-dirs-gtk-0.10+9+g5b7efc6-3 is up to date – skipping
warning: thunar-4.16.8-1 is up to date – skipping

Don’t know if it is important ?
The only thing, I guess is to know how to launch i3 ?

I did a shutdown, reboot with the i3 option in my login menu.

Unfortunately, I got the same problem that I had with my first online installation. I3 doesn’t show up . blank screen and return to the login menu.

You run mainline kernel or lts ? try lts kernel see if that help … here thread about similar/same problem

if installing eos i3 aside with a full DE you need to remove dex from running automatic… it will start parts from the DE what can cause issues…

# dex execute .desktop files
# keep in mind that it can cause issues
# when second to i3 a DE is installed or mixed usage of i3 + xfce4 or GNOME
# in this cases better disable dex and use manual starting apps using xdg/autostart
exec --no-startup-id dex -a -s /etc/xdg/autostart/:~/.config/autostart/

Hi joekamprad,

First thank you all for helping me with this issue. Really appreciated.

I did the change, commented the line in my i3 config file.
Unfortunately, I’m experiencing the same issue ?

exec --no-startup-id dex -a -s /etc/xdg/autostart/:~/.config/autostart/

what is your GPU and drivers in use?
you can also provide boot journal and specs like that:

lspci > log.txt && lsusb >> log.txt && journalctl -b -0 >> log.txt && cat log.txt | eos-sendlog

could be compositing issue from picom

This might help you

Hi Joekamprad,

Thanks helping me for this issue, but I finally go with my old pop os distro.
I think EndeavoursOs is great distro but this kind of bug with brand new installation is frustrating for me. I will follow future development of the distro and surely give it an other try later.
