[i3] Hi, I'm new here

Hi, I used Xfce for a bit and discovered using a mouse is really annoying and I am setting a keyboard shortcut for everything, so I decided to give i3 a try and I love it. I hope I won’t have to come here too often

Oh, since I already have a topic, I can ask a question, what do you guys use to record your screen on i3? I used Kooha before, but I didn’t test it here yet, do you have better software?

The default EnOS i3 install uses scrot as a screensaver.

Have fun exploring your new Window Manager.

Ok, so I will ask one more question as it just happened.

It uses Thunar as a file manager, that’s what I want, but when I download a file in Librewolf and click a button to show it in file manager, this opens Dolphin. How can I fix it?

Just FYI, Sway is basically the Wayland version of i3.

I salute your 2026 linux life plan!

welcome to endeavour (and happy new year)

I know, that’s what I tried first, but Geogebra launched to a white screen and I am too lazy to fix it properly when I can just install i3 instead

Reading this I assume you have both Plasma and i3 installed? Otherwise I don’t understand how Dolphin git into this mix.

You assume correctly.

OBS Studio or Simple Screen Recorder depending on what I’m recording. Whole screen including different workspaces = OBS; Just a window or area = SSR.

This is because Dolphin and/or xdg-desktop-portal-kde are set to default on your system. This is likely if you installed the system with KDE first. The defaults remain.

Yes, I installed it with KDE. How can I change it?

You can do it quickly in a terminal by typing this and hitting Enter:

xdg-mime default thunar.desktop inode/directory

Or you can launch KDE’s system settings, that’s systemsettings, this will open up a window, then search for “default” and change it there.

I did both and restarted, still the same :frowning:

Okay, try this:

In a terminal, an additional step to make sure it uses Thunar, even in KDE, is to create a file with the follow content:

nano .config/xdg-desktop-portal/portals.conf
→ This will create and open a terminal text editor.

org.freedesktop.impl.portal.FileChooser=gtk
→ Paste this in it and save.

Oh, also install the following:

sudo pacman -Syu xdg-desktop-portal-gtk

This still doesn’t work :frowning: It opens in Dolphin no matter what I do.

Okay, nuclear option: if you really don’t intend to use KDE or Dolphin, uninstall them.

sudo pacman -Rs plasma dolphin xdg-desktop-portal-kde

This will force the system to use the desktop portal available.
Again, log out and log in.

[halvar@marek-ms7e56 ~]$ sudo pacman -Rs plasma dolphin xdg-desktop-portal-kde

This is what I get.

Thought this would happen. Look at the apps at the end. If you don’t need any of them, add them to the list. You can double-click them, then middle-click to paste them, then press your space bar, then repeat until they are all in the list. Then hit Enter.

In fact, even if you need any of those apps, uninstall them, then reinstall them.

And now it finally works. Thanks for your help. Hopefully I didn’t break anything in the process. If I did, well, I will return here.

I checked out OBS and it is basically what I need, my only need is recording entire display with or without sound, and it satisfies it. Thanks (second time)
