This is getting a bit to far, but I believe same political education is advised here:
In a “direct democracy” the people are asked to make decisions directly. There is not any fully direct democracy on this plant. Some democracies have direct elements in it. For example Switzerland.
But typically democracies are “representative democracies”, where the people elect a politician and delegate decision making to them. And politicians are independent.
The concept of democracy does not imply that “the citizens are in control of the country’s government.”.
Right.

The guy I voted for was against the war but once elected became the biggest warmonger I’ve ever seen.

I don’t find some of the banter back and forth funny or amusing as some of it crosses the line into political and or controversial subjects. I think we need to tone it down a bit. It’s okay to have an opinion about the video but lets not get off on a tangent.
Can you share a link that justifies this quote, please? ![]()
I have to admit publicly that I am… Greek, in case this helps the conversation about “What democracy really is about?” ![]()
I thought that the discussion is purely technical, trying to interpret the argument “Is anyone using encryption or anonymizing technics a suspect for terrorism?”.
I think the discussion needs to be done in civil manners and promoting truth against fake info.
The term “Privacy” is sorely misunderstood. First there is no privacy rights. This is for the fact that we could simply kill someone bury them in our back yard and deny the police access to conclude the investigation do to our right to privacy.
Digital Privacy however is another story for the simple fact that with data is not that you may have things to “Hide” but you have things to protect. ie Bank account.
Digital Privacy is really New Territory while there are many legitimate needs for things such as encryption there are just as many illegitimate ones as well. Question becomes where is the line in the sand. And who does the drawing?
We’ll let the “AI” decide.
The police shouldn’t have the right to randomly dig up people’s back yards. In societies that put checks on the abuse of power, the police need a warrant for that, typically issued by a judge who likewise has to be very restricted. Of course, in practice, if the system is corrupt, none of that matters, it’s just extra layers of bureaucracy, but the effect is the same.
If it is impossible to tell the legitimate uses apart from illegitimate uses, then the answer should always be the presumption of innocence.
She looks trustworthy. Is that the girl from ex machina?

It’s a fact, man being responsible is fiction.
That’s off topic. And a cheap attempt to provoke controversial statements that will get the thread locked.
And I can argue that people shouldn’t hurt others. But they do
Besides rights are an idea there a cute idea but an idea none the less.
For those of you in America that do think you have rights I would like to ask you to go to wikepedia and type in the search field 1942 Japanese Americans and you will learn all about your precious rights. All we have is a list of temporary privileges and if you read the news even badly you see the list getting shorter and shorter.
Rights are not Rights if someone can take them away they are only privileges.
They are an agreement between civilised people, to respect certain boundaries when it comes to dispute resolution, in cases where degenerating into physical conflict is not in anyone’s interest.
But yes, in the absence of civility, it is might that makes right, that’s the very definition of savagery and it is the default state of nature.
