I finally found that "thing" that will keep me on linux!

Hello all! I’m new to the forum and just started using EndeavourOS this week. I’ve been spending the last two months bistro hopping trying to get a feel for what I want out of linux and learning a little about linux in general along the way. Just last night though I was feeling like I hit a wall and I was tempted to go back to Windows 11. I was having trouble getting HDR going on my pc and gamescope was cooperating with me and general just having little annoying linux gaming issues. I had to keep telling myself that I would be having just as annoying of an experience using Windows just in different ways.

Well this evening I finally found that thing that will keep me on linux! I got steam gaming mode working on my system! I was back in the arch wiki trying to get my head around my HDR troubles when I noticed a section about creating a steam gaming session that I could log into. So I followed the steps and I got it working really easily. HDR works now and I have game scope working well on my system. I think something about running game scope over plasma wasn’t going well. I even use an Nvidia 4080 so this was supposed to be really difficult to get working according to the internet.

Really I’m just proud of how far I’ve come in learning linux this year and that I can manage troubleshooting and problem solving all while using Arch. I had assumed Arch would be too complicated and difficult to keep running but I think I really just lacked confidence in myself. This linux journey has been a lot of fun and I just want to share that with folks who would understand. I’m starting to think I won’t be switching back to windows ever again.

this is one of the nicest things I’ve read in a while. it’s sentimental because that was me in 2017. Find your confidence. it’s an incredibly cool surprise isn’t it, to get good at it in baby steps? rock on man. (no sexism implied)

I totally understand what you mean about Arch!

I stayed away from it for a long time because I had built it up to be this huge thing in my head. Like most things in life, I just needed to get out of my own way. I have a Thinkpad T470 running vanilla arch just fine and my Dell rugged laptop is running EndeavorOS. Both systems are awesome. Looking back, I really wish I had tried Arch earlier.

Welcome to the forums and I hope you have plenty of fun with your system. Linux has brought the joy back to computing for me.

Hey! Good to have you with us! :slight_smile: I’m running an all-AMD system, and use Steam for gaming. It’s been flawless so far under the Proton compability layer. If you ever wonder how long you’ve been on Linux, - just ask yourself when you sat back at your pc and didn’t feel constrained or being watched. That, and stat -c %w / :wink:

Enjoy the journey, even after thirty years, I’m still discovering new things…!

Welcome! Enjoy your stay.

Here’s how I got gamemode working under Plasma, added the following line for launch options in Steam:

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libgamemode.so gamemoderun %command%
