Hybrid GPU issues on ROG Zephyrus G14 (AMD + NVIDIA) – X11 vs Wayland dilemma + future disk encryption

Hi everyone,

I’m fairly new to EndeavourOS on laptops with hybrid graphics, and I’d really appreciate some feedback on my current setup, the issues I’ve run into, and what direction makes the most sense going forward.

Hardware & system info

  • Laptop: ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 (GA403WP)

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 (Radeon 890M iGPU)

  • dGPU: NVIDIA RTX 5070

  • RAM: 32 GB

  • Firmware: ASUS stock (dual-boot system)

Software:

  • OS: EndeavourOS

  • Desktop: KDE Plasma 6.5.4

  • Frameworks: 6.21.0

  • Qt: 6.10.1

  • Kernel: 6.18.2-arch2-1

  • Current session: X11

  • Graphics platform: Hybrid AMD + NVIDIA

  • Dual-boot: Windows (kept for now)

What I tried / what went wrong

My original goal was:

  • AMD iGPU handles display + desktop

  • NVIDIA dGPU used only via offloading for games (Steam/Proton)

  • Stable suspend / TTY switching

  • Keep things as “clean Arch” as possible

However, along the way I ran into a lot of instability:

  • Black screens on boot or after suspend

  • Some TTYs working, others permanently black

  • Inconsistent behavior depending on GPU mode

  • Desktop sometimes only accessible via forcing Integrated mode

  • Hybrid mode repeatedly breaking display after configuration changes

  • NVIDIA working sometimes, but at the cost of stability

Eventually I reached a point where

  • Hybrid graphics as display GPU seems unreliable

  • Integrated-only mode is the only consistently stable setup

  • NVIDIA works via offload in theory, but feels fragile in practice

At the moment, I’m running:

  • X11

  • Integrated GPU as display

  • NVIDIA present, but used cautiously

This finally gives me a stable desktop, but it feels like I’m walking on eggshells.

I feel like I’m standing between two choices: X11 (current), or Wayland, yet i don’t quite know the pros and cons

Additional concern: disk encryption

I haven’t encrypted my Linux install yet.

Before I do:

  • I want a stable GPU setup

  • I really don’t want to debug boot / initramfs / black screens on an encrypted root

  • I’m unsure if Wayland or X11 is the safer long-term choice before encrypting

What I’d love advice on

From people with similar setups or more experience:

1. On modern AMD + NVIDIA laptops, is Wayland now the correct choice?

2\. Is it realistic to expect a stable hybrid setup on X11 anymore?

3\. Would you recommend:

•	Integrated + NVIDIA offload?

•	Full dGPU mode?

•	Wayland with NVIDIA as render only?

4\. If you were in my position, would you switch to Wayland before encrypting, or stabilize X11 first?

5\. Anything you’d redo differently if setting this machine up from scratch?

I’m not opposed to reinstalling if that’s genuinely the cleanest path. I just want to make the right decision before locking things down with encryption.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Any insight would be hugely appreciated

I have been using Wayland on my older ROG Zephyrus without issues. Only thing I have needed to add is amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x12 to boot options.

There is no difference (at least to my knowledge) on encryption between X11 and Wayland.

Have you followed the guide for the G14 here? https://asus-linux.org/guides/arch-guide/

All I needed for my S16 Zenbook was the asusctl package, but because you’ve got dual-gpu you need the full set.
