Hello.
I’m new to Linux, I have trouble keeping my printer working (HP laserjet 1018).
Initially it installed ok, downloaded the proprietary driver, and printed fine.
After reboot it stopped working, I “tried hp-doctor” and it says it can’t find any printers, and can’t communicate with the one installed.
“lsusb” says:
Bus 001 Device 006: ID 03f0:4117 HP, Inc LaserJet 1018
so my printer is detected by Linux, but not the driver?
I tried to fix it, removing the printer, reinstalling the drivers HPlip, switching the usb port, and something worked, because printer started printing again, until reboot…
One more thing, if my printer is turned on during Linux Boot, it takes a long time.
installing hp-printers needs to download some proprietary plugins to work:
sudo hp-setup -i
should handle this
printer is supported by hplip:
And there was a cups update currently… it could be reason for your issue … sometimes you need to reinstall drivers and setup devices again on updating cups.

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the
proper dependencies are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP
supplied tarball has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time
dependencies).
Check types:
a. EXTERNALDEP - External Dependencies
b. GENERALDEP - General Dependencies (required both at compile and run time)
c. COMPILEDEP - Compile time Dependencies
d. [All are run-time checks]

Done.
you could try downgrading hplip:
sudo downgrade hplip
and choose 3.21.8 version
I have the same old printer.
I got mine to work with the help of this guide:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=218509
Although the tutorial was made for the 1020 version, it worked here with the 1018 version in several distros. (Arch, Manjaro, EOS etc.)
I use foo2zjs-nightly 20201127-1 driver.
Edit:
One of the key points:
Forget about hplip
package - it is useless, it will work until first printer restart, unplug & plug or desktop reboot.
Thank You @EOS, it works
I will add this to printer wiki as a workaround for older HP Printers.

@Blaine & @joekamprad Great!
thanks!! I have been going nuts to get my hp laserjet 1018 to work. My only solution in the past was to remove and reinstall the printer after each reboot. That wasn’t sustainable and foo2zjs drivers works!!
I tested few times after rebooting and works fine
