How to get Google Chrome

Before you guys say anything about someone else posting the same thing topic, let me just say that I am a brand new linux user and have 0% experience with linux all together.

I got curious about EndeavourOS from a friend that uses it to self host a bunch of anime that he can stream all from his computer(s). He explained to me that he’s used the OS for years and never had any issues with it, also great for beginners. So I wanted to dive into it but, after looking at a bunch of old articles, and a lot of research on the internet with commands to type to get Google Chrome to install, I have failed.

I also tried to use aur.archlinux.org to get it… I was hoping it would be like some kind of an executable. I am learning now that it doesn’t work that way.

Any help is appreciated and please be specific. If you instruct me without sharing any of the codes, I will not be able to do it. Also, 0 clue how to use AUR.

Thanks!

Please don’t get me wrong.

Your friend may already have had experience with Linux before embarking on the Archlinux-based EndeavourOS.

If you are really interested about Linux and learning how to run and maintain a Linux system, my friendly suggestion would be to start with some distributions like Linux Mint or MX Linux which will give you an smoother introduction to Linux as a new beginner.

When you are warmed up, then you could get into the field and run as best you can with Arch.

With that said, you are perfectly in your right to stick with EnOS. Archlinux and by extension EndeavourOS are DIY distros so be prepared to read some (a lot of) documentation and learn how to manage your system.

A good starting point: ArchWiki

Welcome to EnOS forum and good luck!

You may be right, however, I attempted numerous times to getting Linux Mint and have failed a few dozens of times. The error always being something new. I fix one, and then a new one comes up, then of course I try to google the error and nothing relative to current time shows up. Just old historic posts.

I knew my friend had a larger background to the EnOS considering he can talk about it all day with how awesome it is. He boasts a lot on his creations. And he does a lot of coding too. But I’ve used EnOS before and I liked it way more than Mint & Ubuntu, both which never ran good on this old, disposable laptop. So, now I can give this computer some meaning instead of tossing it out entirely.

Thank you for the link, I appreciate that!

I would recommend using Chromium from the official repos first, to see if that suits your needs, before building Chrome from the AUR.

It worked fine on my Manjaro build but I haven’t installed yet since my recent move to EOS, been using Firefox for now.

I do use Chrome on Windows 10 and saw no discernable difference between it and Chromium on Linux.

I needed Google Chrome to sync my Cloud with my bookmarks, extensions, etc… And I couldn’t do it on Chromium at all. That’s why I created the thread originally. I did get Chromium from the list of apps but apparently you cannot sync your gmail to it or at least I was unable to do that. Firefox is the best, but my Google cloud contains all my bookmarks.

I have no idea, but it might say something that may help with cloud sync in Chromium on the Arch wiki, but if you’re happy with the way Chrome is working, then no worries. Welcome!
