How to dual boot two distros on two different drives?

I currently run Arch, btw, installed on my internal NVME and I want to use another nvme (in an external enclosure, via USB-C, fwiw) to install and run various other distros for testing purposes.

How would I go about configuring grub in order to get the boot prompt asking me to choose which installation I want to boot to?

Personally, I would just simplify things massively and sidestep the entire problem by using your motherboard’s onboard boot selection menu to boot directly from the other drive rather than try to unify the bootloaders, especially if your intention is to chop and change the OS you’re running from it.

So if I understand you correctly, do I just do… nothing? Will the mobo simply recognize the separate installations by itself?

Yeah - basically, do nothing.

Hit whatever hot key your motherboard requires to bring up the boot menu (usually F12) during post and then just select whatever drive has the OS you want to boot on it.

Simple and effective.

You only need to configure them all from the same bootloader if they’re booting from the same physical drive.
