How to change display refresh rate from 144Hz to 60Hz?

I have a Legion 5 laptop with a 144Hz 1080 display, but I want to run it capped at 60.

Using the GUI in Gnome Display Settings does nothing. I choose 60 and when I hit apply it switches back to 144Hz.

I tried xrandr --output eDP-1 --mode 1920x1080 --rate 60 and the display goes blank for a couple of seconds then I get xrandr: Configure crtc 0 failed.

This is where my knowledge ends and googling leads to weird stuff with dumping an EDID.bin file from NVIDIA X-Settings and editing it on a Windows machine, which I’d rather not bother with.

Any ideas?

I am not really sure how you do this on Hybrid graphics. You have Intel load intially and I assume you are using Nvidia drivers once the system starts. I mention this because maybe that will help you in looking online for an answer, i.e “Arch linux hybrid graphics refresh rate” “Nvidia optimus change refresh rate”, etc. It may not be a simple as changing it with only one graphics card. If you are using Optimus, that may play a factor for example.
Also, I know you can change the resolution on the Xserver Display configuration tab in Nvidia settings. Have you tried it there and do you get the same result as the xrandr command?
Also, have you checked to see if you have an xorg.conf file in your system to see what it says? Also check the xorg.conf.d sub-directory.

I’ve seen a couple of ideas around the web, nothing definitive that points to anything in particular. You could try a different kernel, like lts. As @rb0171610 mentioned it may also be related to hybrid graphics or gsync/freesync issues. You could try disabling gpu switching in your bios.

Did you check to see if you have an xorg.conf file? See my comment previously as it may have a different name/location.
Also, are you sure you have set up Nvidia Optimuscorrectly per the Arch wiki? We do not know which method you are using to offload or not offload graphics. Visit and read completely:

Thoroughly check the setup you are using to manage your graphics.
Nvidia-settings is reporting no other refresh rate.

Since this is a laptop, and your CPU, GPU, and screen are integral parts, perhaps your hardware and / or UEFI only offers 144 Hz?

xrandr MIGHT look at only the GPU model type and give results based on the GPU type only. While your UEFI MIGHT only accept 144 Hz due to constraints your manufacturer built in.

There are lot’s of good things about laptops, but one iffy thing is, what you get is what the manufacturer gives you.
