I want to use CE to give myself multiple upgrade points on the OG Dead Space (2008), but i don’t know how to install CE on the same prefix as the game on Steam.
Correct me if I’m wrong here, but isn’t “Cheat Engine” exactly what it says… a way to cheat a game by gaining points or special skills otherwise only acquired by completing levels in a game?
Obviously yes. But my problem is that it doesnt detect my game process if not on the same prefix and i don’t know how to put it on the prefix.
Please help if you have any suggestions.
I know NOTHING about that. I prefer to play games as intended by the developers. In all honesty, I’m not sure how much help you’ll receive here.
I don’t know the answer to the question but, just for clarification, discussing installing cheats in single player games shouldn’t be against our rules in any way.
Each person enjoys games differently and some find it fun for their character to be more powerful and/or the game to be easier.
@dalto - We’ll have to agree to disagree. Cheating is cheating, as far as I’m concerned. But, I suppose you’re right in that at least it’s a single player game.
@Daisetzu - After a web search, you may be out of luck. Seems while Linux compatibility is there, it’s VERY hit or miss. Someone may be a long to suggest some ideas.
My opinion is somewhat similar to the old Wiccan Covenant, “An ye harm none, do what ye will.” Please note, I am not, nor have I ever been Wiccan, I just read a lot.
But my thought is this is not something there will be an easy out of the box answer.
Regardless of personal views on cheating in games (I see no harm in doing so with single player games, who is the developer to tell you how to play games? I don’t actually do it though because it sucks the fun out of it for me, but to each their own)
You can use protontricks to install it on the same prefix.
e.g. protontricks-launch setup.exe
would open up a dialogue that allows you to select a game from steam to use that game’s prefix and launch setup.exe with proton which will then allow you to install it on that prefix. I’m not sure if this is necessary or not to use cheat engine, I have never used it. (Probably not necessary)
To then run cheat engine on the same proton prefix you can use the same method as well, something like protontricks-launch cheatengine.exe
.
I’m not sure if this will actually work though it’s just the first thing I thought of trying.
The second thing to try which I am more certain will work is steam tinker launch, I believe if you configure steam tinker launch to use a custom command that refers to cheat engine and tick the box to fork the custom command it would run alongside the game
I don’t think you can run multiple instances in the same Steam prefix at the same time. On that note, it does work to run a program from within Steam: https://gist.github.com/michaelbutler/f364276f4030c5f449252f2c4d960bd2. I did this with a Titan Quest stash manager; not running at the same time, but it needed to access the game’s installation files.
How do i do this with STL, i’ve used it before to install Vortex for some games i wanted to mod but can you tell me how i can run Cheat Engine trough it?
It’s not my first time beating Dead Space btw I just don’t want to waste 60 euros for the Remake.
Protontricks doesn’t work it says the windows version i have is not supported but in winecfg i am clearly running Win10
protonhax is even available in the AUR and should work to get cheat engine running. It’s just odd to me that they don’t have their latest release available via github, only 7.5, not 7.6. But I guess the regular download link would do fine.
Is it ethical to cheat ? If it’s only your single player game … do whatever you want. You can’t harm an algorithm.
Unless you’re a speedrunner which is chasing a record or so.
Most competitive online titles would ban players that are using cheat engines or other game altering tools anyway. Thus I don’t see here a violation.
Riolu, is that you? (JK, a little inside joke.)
This is good info for me too! I don’t play any game competively or speedrun anything. Sandbox games I don’t use cheats in, but in story driven games I see no reason to block seeing the entire thing I paid for just because I have skill issues. Multiplayer games I have zero interest in, I play games to escape from humanity, not to spend more time with it, ewww.
I already explained it, custom command, and fork custom command.
