How come it takes more than a minute to shutdown or reboot the system?

I just did a fresh install on a UEFI system using xfce.

I have three partitions, one is /, one is /home and one is /boot with boot flag.

Regardless if I did a reboot or a shutdown, regardless after doing a system update it takes more than a minute before it reboots/shutsdown.

It is some “Session 1” that is taking a lot of time not sure what it is:

Here is a gif to demonstrate the issue:

This seems to be a similar issue with RebornOS as well:

Switch to a different TTY and see what is still running. Or check the journal after you bring it back up. To check the previous boot in reverse (latest first):

sudo journalctl -r -b-1

While I am logged in?

After rebooting the OS, right?

Will check it out shortly!

I ran that command after reboot here is a sample of it:

Hi @unix_lover
I had the same issue before. Look at this thread Restarting -> stop job for user running!

I did the Magic SysRq key. At least it helped to shut down instantly the proper way.
Though I do not really know what caused it, but I rarely encounters it after that and if it did the Magic SysRq key helps.

I hope this helps. Please let me know how it goes with you.
Thank you.

Hi @limotux

so durring shutdown I should press the print screen if I am understanding correctly?

As far as I remember you have to configure something.
Give me a minute please.
Here [Tip] Enable Magic SysRq Key (REISUB)
I hope this helps.
Let me know how it goes with you.
Just to update you:

I am on BTRFS by the way.
I noticed much faster boot time with dracut + systemd-boot.

This looks like it is designed to create forced reboot. Non the less I tried it but when I turn off or reboot my computer in a normal way, I still get the same issue.

I am more after trying to get it to just turn off quickly. I am on not too sure why this is happening on all arch distros?

I am using grub actually, not systemd boot. Is this an issue with grub?

Neither me.
But after I did the Magic SysRq key it helped me switch of instantly, and I didn’t encounter this issue frequently after that, though I don’t know why!

Of course it is up to you, but grub has what I see as an issue, in some cases after some updates you have to run certain commands or you end up with unbootable system.
With the help of our friends here I could create a “hook” to run those commands automatically. Grub Hook to grub-install and grub-mkconfig? and it was working fine. (How would I guarantee I would not skip running those commands in case needed!)

But when Cassini, dracut came out, and systemd-boot became the default I converted as I said for a few reasons.

  • systemd-boot is much faster in booting.
  • systemd-boot is simpler and less prone to breaking.
  • for me, I prefered to ditch grub as… well… they changed something that caused many systems unbootable, how would I guarantee something similar won’t happen again! Just my personal point of view. But Grub was my favourite because with BTRFS I could boot to earlier snapshots.
  • I am on BTRFS for many reasons, snapshots I can revert to in case something breaks.
  • Above all, I made the changes to feel that I am on the same page, as if I had a fresh install of Cassini, where the default is systemd-boot and with dracut.

Just to be clear, I am not with/against grub/systemd-boot. It is just my personal taste, my personal feelings of what is better for me.

Does it at least show Windows and other operating systems installed on the computer?

From my readings here I believe sytemd-boot can let you have Windoze and other OS, but I can’t really give any further info or experience as I am having only EndeavourOS on my machine.

I am sure our friends here are more experienced and knowledgable than me with this.

I see thanks mate

so whenever you turn off your PC you use the keyboard shortcuts?

No, after you do the configuration which as far as I remember and understand is just running a command as:

Switching off the computer is done normally.
ONLY in case you find this issue of jobs running and taking forever to switchoff/restart you press the buttons as shown in the thread to force it to shut down.

I ran that but it had no effect.

I remember when I used EndeavourOS (or any other arch based system) and I never once had this issue before, I have no idea why this is happening all of a sudden. I hope this is an Arch Linux bug and they fix it asap!

Did you reboot after you did the command?
If you did, pressing the buttons as explained in the post does not switch off? Or you mean it is working but your are still getting the jobs running issue?

From that great post

" Now, when you want to hard-reboot the computer, perform the following key combination:
press and hold the Alt key the entire time. Now, one after another, with about a second in between, press (tap) the following keys: SysRq, R, E, I, S, U, B. Your computer should reboot if everything was done correctly (you can let go of the Alt key now  ). "

might need push “fn” + SysRq ( or it Print screen ) on some devices

In my case I don’t have SysRq so I press ALT + PrintScreen then REISUB
Press and keep pressed the ALT, then “tap” the others.

my point … some device need “FN” push so " SysRq or Printscreen " for register .

EDIt. Pinebook Pro is one that need “FN” push

Does this work also after the shutdown command has been issued or only while in desktop?
