High CPU temps - caused by plasmashell?

After a recent update I’ve started to get really high temps (over 70 C) when I log in. Plasmashell user CPU usage is high, over 70 %, general CPU usage is less than 6 %. I’ve tried eliminating background apps but they don’t seem to affect the situation.

I tested on a test profile and the temps were completely fine, under 40 C.

How do I trace what is causing this spike in CPU temps? Is something in my plasmashell buggin’ out?

All help greatly appreciated.

There are some newer UEFI Bios updates for your board. The latest is in Beta but there are two before that and they include a newer AMD AGESA. The beta version also has a newer AMD AGESA again.

Edit: Are you also using amd pstates?

Edit:

cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_driver

According to this I’m using “amd-pstate-epp”.

I’ll see if a BIOS update does anything.

The temps chilled down after a while while I was searching for the correct BIOS version and formatting a USB. Not sure what happened there.

I updated and reconfigured my new BIOS (it got reset to default settings and caused some boot issues :man_facepalming: ). Temps were initially very high when logging in, but soon chilled down. I’m marking this as solved.

Thanks for the help!

I don’t use amd-pstate-epp as i find this better.

[ricklinux@rick-ms7c37 ~]$ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_driver
amd-pstate

I’m using amd_pstate=passive or you could try active also.
