Hey, I'm new to this club

With delayed release, one could argue there is a system of additional testing in place: that is the testing done by upstream a month ago: check and see if anything has popped up during the last month and if nothing then it’s a go. I think that still counts as additional testing, even if they don’t do it themselves.

There is a trade-off. The applications get time for additional testing. This especially helps with DE releases like gnome and kde.

On the other hand, the fact they have to manually snapshot the releases means it is easy for accidental partial updates to be created which often leads to breakage. This is combined with the fact that Manjaro has custom packages which can also cause conflicts.

It ends up being a pick your poison type of situation.

… but it seems that the community of voluntary testers among the users is largely relied upon.

… so like in the real world …

I pick the poison that has an antidote available in all hospitals!

hm …, that would be Windows? :flushed:

There is no antidote for Windows. Just a slow painful demise.

Or it could be like Windows. Throw it all in a bowl…mix it up and let everyone feed off of it for a while and see if it leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

Exactly. The least worst choice is still the best.

I have to make decisions based on this premise daily.

When it comes to modern desktop operating systems, “the least worst” pretty much sums up what we are using. They are all awful, but at least GNU/Linux is not defective by design.

And by the looks of it, this situation will not be changing any time soon – it seems the Hurd requires a bit more time until it’s finally ready…

I was like that three years ago when I switched to Antergos (the predecessor of EndeavourOS), but I kept Manjaro as well. In fact, it was then that I set out to get to know the Arch philosophy better.

I deleted Windows to make room for my favorite edition. So much space became available that I could also install edeavouros. In memoriam Antergos I made the right choice because it goes on.
With endeavourOs I have the choice between the file systems. Other Os force you to use one or the other file system.

Thank you for reading. I will probably have to ask a few more questions in the foreseeable future …
