Hello EOS folks! Just wanted to take a minute to introduce myself - I’ve browsed many a forum in all corners of the internet in my Linux life, but I felt the need to sign up here - I may have found my home!
Let me be honest, I’m a truck driver and a parent of 5 kids, so my computer time is not nearly as plentiful as it used to be, but I have done my fair share of distro-hopping since my first use of Ubuntu back in 2008. I’ve mainly stuck with Debian-based distros out of the naive misconception that Arch was something I couldn’t tackle. I’ve just about used all the main-stream distros and even some lesser-known types. For the last few months, I narrowed my hopping ranged and had settled back and forth with Fedora and straight Debian. I’m fairly technically inclined and know my way around the terminal and computers thanks to some Computer Science college courses and tinkering with machines my whole life. But at this point, I needed something that “just works” so I could focus on the other pressing matters - like earning a paycheck and playing with all the kiddos.
Enter EOS. I’ve heard about it, but never gave it the time of day because it was Arch-based. Manjaro was something I tried, but it just didn’t set right with me for some reason. Yes, I’m a believer there’s something for everyone and everyone is different, so by far I’m not here to be a “use this distro/DE or you are dead to me” person. I’ve always preferred Xfce or GNOME (without extensions).
My needs? Pretty much a glorified Chrome OS with more of a bare-metal OS system instead of solely web-app based. So I downloaded the newest Neo ISO and popped it on my laptop. BOOM. Done hopping. I have a lot to dig into to fully experience EOS I’m sure, but at face-value, this is Xfce done right IMO - It’s perfectly snappy on my HP Ryzen 3250U laptop (upgraded to 16gb RAM). I love the theme, and to be quite frank - growing up with a Dad that raised us with the space program and everything rockets - I just love the general look and appeal of EOS when it comes to the rocketry and the vast expanse of space. I used to want Debian just so I install it and it doesn’t move and I can just fire up and go, but with the rolling-release keeping my system up-to-date and my relatively simple needs, I do believe EOS has just cured my distro-hopping addiction
On a side note - having perused many a forum over the years, I must say the Endeavour forums are by far the friendliest, most supportive group of folks I’ve ever read through - hence the reason to sign up and actually become a part of such a community.
Apologies for the long-winded first post - but thank you Endeavour Team for creating such an amazing distro and curing my addiction. I look forward to the Endeavour of growing further into this amazing system and community!
No apologies required for such an introduction, I guess that kind of positive feedback will be well concieved by those who are actually contributing actively to further improve the distro. And those are definitely around here.
Welcome to the forum, have fun & enjoy the time that you’ve gained back together with your kiddos !
I forgot to mention - another thing that has plagued me is the need to customize my desktop. I have a love/hate relationship with that. While I think that it is awesome to be able to completely customize your desktop to what you like/need - I’ve come to be the kind of person where I’d rather just have something work and look the way I like right out of the box - with maybe some key combination tweaks and minor details. Every single distro has always had something “off” for me to the point I ended up spending time ricing the entire look.
Another +1 for EOS - this just looks and feels perfect as-is IMO (the only thing I’ve changed is making WhiskerMenu pop up with the Windows key on my laptop - and installed a few choice apps and web-apps, including this forum). Everything appears to be well thought out and placed/created with purpose. Again - excellent job to the Endeavour Team!
I hope you enjoy Arch and EOS, Linux is for everyone. The freedom of choice in Linux is good so the DE + OS that works best for you means it’s your PC (And a PC that works best for you).
We are always here to help if needed, I haven’t come across any issues with Arch so far (4-5 months) so all good for me, your total Linux experience is a lot more than mine so you will have no problems tackling Arch.
Always great to read that another choom has seen what EndeavourOS has to offer and likes what they see. Welcome to the most helpful and friendly forum in Linuxville, enjoy.
@ricklinux I ended up going with Xfce - I played around with KDE while the Live boot was running, and I’ve used Gnome, Cinnamon, MATE, and LXQt in the past. I always keep coming back to Xfce, so I just went straight for it through the online install.
@r0ckhopper I haven’t seen this clip in forever! My uncle sent it to me years back when I made the move from construction to OTR truck driving. This never gets old!
