Hello.
I am new to the forum but I thought i would like to share my recent experience with EOS.
I will be honest I have been using Arch for a number of years and I am hooked with the system and how it works.
Same install nearly 5 year now. LOL
I know that people say “Arch breaks for no reason” well I think that is rubbish.
Arch breaks by what the user has done wrong. I will leave that there. hahahaha
My friend who has been on Mint and Debian for a few years now wanted me to install Arch on his PC yesterday but although he is not a total noob he is a little unfamiliar with Terminal so I talked him into another option which was EOS.
Its been about 5 years since the last time I installed it myself and then yes it was very terminal orientated but far from hard as there is a lot of hand holding built into EOS.
So I installed it for him and began to explain about update commands and printer support etc … then I found out there is no need to learn him anything as EOS does it all for you.
I left him a text file with commands on to deal with orphaned packages and clearing cashe and some other handy commands as you do. LOL
To my astonishment after install there was nothing to do . I was amazed , it picked his printer up and the update process was nothing more than the enter key using the welcome utility.
I mean I was taken back honest, you guys have thought of it all really.
The WOW factor was right there infront of me.
Its not over bloated and the package count is acceptable right out of the box.
I strongly believe a newcomer to linux could find this distro easier than mint or ubuntu, its a polished distro that does everything for the user.
I think you guys should have a medal the size of a frying pan for compiling such a great work of art.
I am still saying WOW in my head.
I am actually debating using it myself and giving arch a break for a while.
I did not think I would have seen an arch based distro so user friendly.
Its way better than I remember it been years ago.
The moment I make the decision to install it I will follow up with a donation as you guys really deserve and help after compiling this fantastic distro.
Welcome! Good to have you with us. EOS definitely smoothens out a lot of the rough edges and manual work that Arch (understandably) leaves to you. Enjoy the journey!
I’m pleased to hear someone talk about a 5 year old install!
I installed (to test something) arch this morning (used archinstall script) and even it is so much easier than it used to be..and I was happy enough with the job it did, course it was just to test, not to use
There is nothing wrong with using Archinstall.
People frown upon it but realistically its built into the ISO to use so why not .
I have done manual and Archinstall the only thing I find is that Archinstall can be a pain in the bum sometimes especially when doing manual partitioning.
If you use the entire disc and let it do its thing it is normally OK.
PS: I hate the bad press archinstall has, I hate the RTFM crowd and cant stand the I use Arch idiots. LOL
Thats me been a grumpy old twat. hahaha
I’m the grumpy old twat that does it the Arch way and says RTFM
Well not really, but I certainly do frown upon those that haven’t yet mastered doing a search before they ask the question that’s asked every week or two.
currently on a manual base Arch install myself but I was on EOS for almost 6 months or so prior. EOS is a good distro without any bloat really and some good configurations pre-set.
That being said we have a few different distro users here, some use base Arch, Debian, Fedora, NixOS, Gentoo, among others. The forum and users here are great too, I have learned a lot from the various threads, both old and new.
