Hello from Malaysia

Hello!

Relatively new user from Malaysia here. I’ve actually lurked around here for a bit back when I first heard of EndeavourOS. Tested it out on an old laptop and liked what I got, but held off from making the jump from Windows.

However, Microsoft just had to ruin a good thing going and friggin doubled the annual subscription fee. I already hated most of the features creeped in that I didn’t care for in Win11 (among other things) but that was the last straw.

Thus, I made the switch to this lovely distro a couple of days ago, and cancelled my M365 subscription.

Here’s to being part of this warm community and (hopefully) sticking with this distro for the foreseeable future!

Thank you kindly. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Wasn’t expecting this to be noticed so soon! I guess the community here is as friendly as it is reputed to be.

hey! Good to have you with us! Dropped my last Microsoft service last year, feels good to not be reliant on corps who have no care for you. Welcome to the side of freedom! Enjoy the journey!

Thanks! Not going to lie, it did feel like a daunting step to take after being with Microsoft since…. forever. But once I stepped over here (after backing up all my data from OneDrive, which was its own hassle because of course it is), it feels so weird yet so right to just have a PC that only has what I want, how I want it, and nothing else.

No bloat, no ads everywhere, and especially no requirement for 24/7 internet connection.

Might be jumping the gun by going for Arch but simpler, purple, and bundled with a friendly community for my first real distro that I intend to daily drive from now on, but it ain’t called a journey for nothing.

Here’s hoping Endeavor goes as smoothly for you as it has for me. Oh and welcome to the forum!

Kudos for taking the leap and trying something new. Daunting perhaps, but I’d be surprised if it doesn’t work out for you.

If in doubt, try asking here. There are knowledgeable people here who are willing to help - just take into account that sometimes it may take some time for someone to respond, as people are helping out as much as they can in their spare time. (Some even try to sleep every now and then  .)

Have fun learning Linux and EOS.

that feeling when your anxiety about your MS comfort zone starts giving way to the reality that you have exactly what you wanted and needed for so long without them…is priceless.

[took me about 7-8 months to fully get there, that’s how tight the hold was]. never looked back.

Welcome. It’s a life-changing experience you were brave enough to do, imo.

Not gonna lie, though. I did get a mini heart-attack when my files seemingly refused to get backed up to my external drive. Turned out Microsoft, in its infinite wisdom, decided at some point to simply back most of them onto the cloud with no local copy. Restarting helped to fix the issue, but then mysteriously the good old Ctrl+A into copypaste did not select all files I wanted, leading me to manually right-click drag over multiple files that it missed.

It felt like Microsoft was holding my data hostage, haha. Adding salt to the wound was Microsoft magically offering me a subscription that was essentially what I already had before when I went to cancel my M365 subscription(apparently having no Copilot made it ‘Personal Classic’)… but still a hundred local buckaroos more expensive than what I paid previously. Before that, they didn’t even offer a downgrade option. Only upgrades.

Curious.

dragging your data to the cloud whether you consent or not soooo MS-EULA as well as all the shady stuff you listed

I can hear Don Henley singing “you can check out any times you like…”

Most of the computing planet finds this abuse reasonable; I had to walk away.
