The reason I would use a timer is that there is info like uptime and memory utilization in there.
The performance cost of updating it every 5-15 minutes would be negligible.

If I were to do something like that (and I’d sooner install the Fish shell1 and symlink it as /bin/sh, but nevermind that) I would probably just add a script to ~/.config/autostart-scripts 
1 Right after I return home from the visit to the ATM machine… Btw, those things have interesting PCB boards…
