Gratitude from GeForce GT 710 and Me [OT]

Dear Friends on the Forum

First let me thank all of you quite a lot.

For the last 23 years I am using GNU-Linux to do all my works of teaching, reading, and writing a lot, and at times watching movies like everyone else. I am not technical at all. I teach Economics in a Kolkata college for a little more than three decades and I write in Bangla (the actual name of what the colonial British called Bengali). As ‘paying back to the community’ I wrote quite a few essays and two books on Linux and uploaded them ‘copyleft’ on the Web.

I used a lot of FLOSS OS-s before coming to Arch Linux some two years back and at last I thought I discovered something when I would not want to explore any more.

But, then, eight months back I purchased a desktop machine with the CPU and VGA details like these:

And hell got loose. I tried everything around ‘noueveau’ and proprietary drivers from NVIDIA but nothing worked. In fact I tried even to dual boot into some other FLOSS OS like Manjaro, Fedora, and so on – tried it some uncountable times. But nothing worked. Almost all my works stopped. I had to purchase a laptop as an alternative.

And then at last one of my Linux friends sent me a link about this EndeavourOS.

This was really outstanding. First, no problems any more with graphics. And secondly, and more importantly, this had everything that I loved in AL and some more things that I have already started liking a lot.

I was so moved that now I have installed EOS on both my desktop and laptop. Though the laptop had no problem with Arch. It is AMD Ryzen CPU with Radeon VGA. And within a few days I am going to install the same in my daughter’s machine.

I don’t know how to thank you. Obviously I am thinking about donation and other means as and when they are possible. But, I am really overwhelmed in gratitude. You have given me back my machine, my work and my peace.

This project was born mainly out of love (@Bryanpwo correct me if I’m wrong). Everyone here who is helping out with the OS and with our community editions is doing it out of pure generosity and love for this distribution. The main goal is to present users with a good distribution without harming the flavor of Arch. And letting the user embark on their own Endeavour of discovering the beauty of Linux and open source.

Commercialization is not a target for this project or for this distro. We all pitch in where we can and if you can help with anything you can directly contact @Bryanpwo or @joekamprad or @manuel or even one of our awesome mods (@dalto or @ricklinux or @freebird54 … etc top of my head).

If you have any issues don’t hesitate to ask for help here. The community will try its best to get the issue solved. But you also have to provide good information like logs (you can learn how to obtain them here) and posting in the right area would help too (Read this to get a better understanding).

So we all warmly welcome you to our humble forum and we’re so glad that you like our distribution. And thank you for the kind words and the gratitude you show us for the work we have done is fule that powers this Endeavour.

I think your graphics card is supported by the 470 series of the Nvidia driver.

You can check it with command

nvidia-driver-supported-branches -a

If it is supported, you will get longer support from Nvidia with the 470 series driver than 390 series. Eventually, Nvidia is going to stop support of the older drivers anyway, and then you can start using the open source driver nouveau.

I do run on the same card here and using 470xx version without issues :heavy_check_mark:

I just copy-pasted your command blindly. I am absolutely illiterate in these things. Where can I read a bit more about this command and related ones?

Run terminal command:

eos-apps-info

or click icon EndeavourOS apps info
and you will find information about the EndeavourOS apps.
