Gnome white crash screen (like BSoD) after system update

Hi,
I haven’t used my laptop for some days an when I try to update the system I receive a package conflict: ffmpeg (NOT installed) and ffmpeg-obs (installed from AUR). On the AUR page of the package I read that is a known problem and the solution is uninstall OBS studio by tytan652 and ffmpeg-obs, then update. I have followed this process an the update was completed with success. But after a reboot I see only this crash screen (like Windows BSoD):

Unfortunately I haven’t any log because I had restore a btrfs snapshot (because I need to work with my PC :innocent:). I only have the list of package that are upgradable:

NOTE: I’m using Gnome 45.5 and I have put it in IgnorePkg because I do not wont update to Gnome 46 now. I have an HP Envy x360 2-in-1 Laptop 15-ew0xxx and Kernel Linux 6.9.4-zen1-1-zen

My suggestion would either be to update or use another distro or DE that doesn’t update/change so often

TL;DR
I agree with @smokey.

You have put updates to a complex piece of your system on hold and practically put your system in a partial upgrade state.

On a rolling release system like Arch partial upgrades are unsupported:

Arch Linux is a rolling release distribution. That means when new library versions are pushed to the repositories, the Developers and Package Maintainers rebuild all the packages in the repositories that need to be rebuilt against the libraries. For example, if two packages depend on the same library, upgrading only one package might also upgrade the library (as a dependency), which might then break the other package which depends on an older version of the library.

You have gotten lucky so far but you seem to have run out of luck with the latest updates to your packages.

Thanks for the reply.
I don’t understand if my system is in a partial update state after the snapshot restore or before. When I see the crash screen I can access and login to shell (with CONTROL+ALT+F4). If I reinstall gnome through the shell can I exit from this inconsistent state?

Probably you are true, but gnome is perfect for my work flow.
I’m waiting to update because some extension aren’t available for gnome 46 and when I tried it was buggy and my session crash frequently.

At the very moment you hold up updates to a package (some packages) and update the rest of your system, you have practically set your system in partially upgrade state.

This might not be a problem in the short run or depending on what packages are being excluded from being updated. In the long run though, it is not a question of if but when the system will break.

If I were to resolve a similar issue on my system, I would remove the packages added to be ignored from pacman.conf and update the whole system as a whole.

I cannot guarantee that this will work out but that is the way an Arch system is intended to be maintained.

Also, if you prefer to run a rolling release like Arch, you may be better off to have one or a few non working extensions for some time rather than having a broken system which stops your flow of working all together.

Hopefully it will all work out for you. Make sure you have a live usb with EnOS’ iso at hands if you ever need to perform some “rescue” operations. Good luck!
