Just got Gnome 47 from Testing. all my extensions worked after editing the metadata files for “47”. Not too bad… Dash2Dock Animated, Gtk4 Desktop Icons NG, Lock Keys, Arch Linux Updates Indicator, Uptime Indicator & Apps Menu all work with the “47” change.
I’m beta testing plasma 6.2 currently. What new things made you wanna grab gnome 47 beta if I might ask?
Well…I’ve been a Gnome user for the last 20 years…so it’s a “little” hard for me to change now… And I wanted to see what the new version looked & worked like…just a gluten for punishment I guess…
Sorry, maybe I didn’t communicate what I was asking properly. I was trying to find out why you decided to start using version 47 early. Rather than waiting for it to be released officially.
For example the reasons why I am using 6.2 beta are
- To find bugs in general.
- Per monitor brightness controls.
- Ability to rename audio devices.
- Screen tearing finally works.
Well…I used to do bug work for Gnome years ago & still like to run the “beta” versions…a combo of the “new-shiny thing” & real-world feedback. I am using Gnome on Wayland & do report findings back as they come up…
Cool, that’s as good of a reason as they come.
That & I just enjoy being on the “bleeding” edge. I used to run Debian Sid until having the nVidia drivers broken every 6 months started getting to me… I’m now waiting for the BattleMage Intel cards to come to market to test the Xe driver with hardware that will “really” run with that driver…I have an A750 that is working nicely with the i915 driver & not bad with the Xe (testing) driver…a couple of months will see Battlemage out & then my fun begins…
I have actually been looking into purchasing a new dedicated gpu from intel when they release. I want to get away from Nvidia, but don’t really want to go to AMD. I’m just hoping it matches the performance of my 3080 while still having good software support.
BattleMage is targeted at mid-range GPUs, so it really will be the sweet spot (think 4060/4070 range) I have a semi-regular thread on where the Xe driver is at & the “current” info is indicating the high-end BattleMage cards will be out for Black Friday…with the mid & low cards before Christmas…nice time to be into GPUs for gaming. The most current into for Xe is: https://www.phoronix.com/news/Intel-Battlemage-Mesa-Default
So we are almost on top of 6.12 & really ready for BattleMage!
As you can see…there are 5 GPUs slated for release…as the current lineup is A380 - A580 & A700 series (3 each for 700), there “should” be a nice price-point spread by Christmas!!!
NOTE: I forgot about the A310 – guess it was a bit below my radar
Reading the Tea leaves it looks like 1 high-end card…3 spread in mid-range & 1 low-end card…of course, that is all speculation…
Looks like you replied to yourself, so I never got the message.
I’m totally ignorant when it comes to gnome: Is fractionally scaling officially supported out of the box now (e.g. 175%)?
No, you have to enable it because it’s still experimental.
GNOME 47 includes an enhanced fractional display scaling feature, which provides better support for legacy X11 apps. This feature is still considered experimental and should only be used for testing. To enable it, you can run the following from the command line:
gsettings set org.gnome.mutter experimental-features '["scale-monitor-framebuffer", "xwayland-native-scaling"]'
It “seems” to work OK…but the cursor is not returning back to the prior scale when reverting…time for a bug report.
Just got GNOME 47 through “stable” repos.
I am a couple of minutes into the reboot after the update. Everything seems to be working so far. My extensions and all.
After the update, I have this issue:
There are large black borders on some screens.
A day ago, I had some issues with the update and reverted the system using BTRFS and Timeshift. Today, I tried again without any issues during the update, but I still have this problem. I think everything else is working well.
Edit: I solved it by removing amdvlk
.
I had two packages using that: Steam and Zed. After removing amdvlk
and rebooting, the issue is fixed.
I updated to 47 it by accident . In my the colors are not there haha
But that aside, my laptop frequently freezes when I open file folders and use the search bar. This is happening every time after the update.
