There’s a donation link at the top of the page. I think everyone who’s interested in GIMP getting better should click it.
You both may be interested in this. I bet it will help get things moving.
An update from the GIMP 3 Development Team.
Progress on completing the blocking issues for 3.0 slowed over the summer due to the maintainer and some of the main developers falling ill after the Libre Graphics Meeting conference. This is why we are “late” compared to our original estimated timelines. Thankfully everyone’s feeling much better now, and work has resumed in earnest! As of this writing, we’re currently at 96% completion for the 3.0 RC1 milestone, with 11 issues remaining.
I’ve been keeping an eye out for 3.0, I’m still muddling along in 2.whatever but I decided not to put any real effort into learning it properly or committing to any lengthy projects until the next release given how much it sounds like is likely to be changing.
I’ve been using the development version. When I started doing so over a year ago, it would crash for any and everything, but randomly and mostly when I was finished exporting/saving, so it wasn’t a deal-breaker.
Now, it rarely crashes.
Oh, and it looks better because it can properly use your GTK 3 themes.
For the most part, though, it’s still GIMP’s UI, but with a better UX. More tools and features work how you expect — just overall more intuitive.
The normal version does this too and it’s always very random (can be doing anything too).
Guess they’re just trying to make old users feel at home
In all seriousness though it’s never bothered me too much except for when it happens when I go to save.
Looking forwards to this, been using for years now and still struggle to remember where some things are.
I’ve been using the development version for ages. Currently at version 2.99.18-6. It’s been amazing for quite some time now.
A GIMP 3.0.0 RC1 release checklist has been created.
A due date of “Nov 3, 2024” has been specified. I’m not sure how much we can make of that.
If you’d like to glimpse the future; the not too distant 3rd of November, here is the draft release announcement for GIMP 3.0 RC1, scheduled for release that day.
We are very excited to share the first release candidate for the long-awaited GIMP 3.0! We’ve been hard at work since our last development update to get this ready, and we’re looking forward to everyone finally being able to see the results…
It’s fully released now with an updated and finalised article.
So, not Nov. 3, but Nov. 7. Not bad.
Future changes to release process
We are well aware that the path to GIMP 3.0 has been a long one… This means that we are aiming for GIMP 3.2 to come out within a year after the final release of 3.0,
rather than in 2050 as is often joked!
I think I’ll believe in 2049.
I feel like the thread is solved now
Not that I want to disappoint you, but that’s only RC1.
While not the full release, it is certainly closer than before, which confirms that yes, GIMP 3.0 is alive!
I’ll concede it’s undead…though I wonder if we need to expose it to sunlight and put it out of it’s misery ? (joking…well at least partly)
umm out of curiosity how do you search for things? I know this has technically been answered but I am more interested in how you ended up here asking than finding a solution.
RC2 is out!
