Freezing after install

like to install Endeavour on my imac 2012 natrual , after 2 times failings with partition schemes ,tried automatic partitioning and gnome desktop only. But after booting desktop was freezing while changing backround pics. after several rebootings still the same …black screen.
what I am doing wrong here , had until 2019 Antergos, and until now Solus OS on,
thanks Wolf

Hi @guy  During install, the ‘base and other packages’ folder can be opened up and actually contains various drivers, which can be unselected if not needed, and fix the freezing (happened in my case). If you know which drivers you need, it might be worth a look in there.

Other than that, I’m not very tech, lol, so, if you post your inxi -Fxz I’m sure others will be able to help.

Welcome to the forum. There could be many reasons for freezing, impossible to tell from your description, so you should provide more details.

As suggested above, post the output of

inxi -Fxxxza

If inxi is not installed, first install it with

sudo pacman -S inxi

You’re welcome, and just type in what @kresimir has said, in the terminal … sudo pacman -S inxi, and let it install, then copy/paste into the terminal inxi -Fxxxza. The results of that need to be posted here; when you do that, choose the </> button in the toolbar just above where you’re typing, and put the text in there. Apologies if I’m posting stuff you already know.

Looks like it’s running on Wayland,. Maybe log on with standard Gnome or Xorg. It’s also running on open source Nouveau for the Geforce 9400 GT

Nvidia is the 340xx series drivers which i think are only available from the AUR.

I would try logging in on non wayland.
Also notice the CPU is running a bit warm. Not sure if that’s normal on these Macs.

now after 5.or 6. installation running it for while, adding apps including changed log in with Xorg, after this changed backround pics and bang!!! freezing ,after reboot all black, only can move mouse to play around…mmmmmhhhhhh

Is this still on Gnome? You may need to try the Nvidia 340xx drivers from the AUR.

just follow your advice and step by step like in here :slight_smile:https://endeavouros.com/docs/hardware-and-network/graphic-cards-gpu-driver-and-setup/nvidia/nvidia-installer/ and after reboot Iam back in, see if it works for a while, thank you very much for helping , hard day today, but happy now

I wasn’t sure if it would pick up the driver for that card using the nvidia-installer-dkms Because it is an older Geforce 9400 GT I thought you would have had to install them from the AUR.
Do you have inxi installed?

yay -S inxi

Post this command

inxi -G

thats the new outcome : wolf@wolf-imac101 ~]$ inxi -Fxxxza

Okay it looks like its running on the 340xx drivers. :+1: That’s great hopefully it works better?

Edit: Also see it is running on xorg. So now you can try log in under wayland gnome and see . If not working stick with xorg.

thanks great

I’m not sure how you got the 340xx version installed because i didn’t think the nvidia-installer or nvidia-installer-dkms would provide this version.

Unsupported drivers:

  • 340xx –> unsupported but works with xorg 1.20 (current version)

I looked it over again and it looks like only xorg is supported anyway.

Affected Cards: GeForce 8/9, ION and 100-300 series cards [NV5x, NV8x, NV9x and NVAx]

The driver can be found in the AUR or use the default Nouveau driver shipped with the kernel

The Nouveau driver is known to cause system freezes with older Nvidia cards.

The easiest way to install 340xx dkms drivers:

yay -S nvidia-390xx-dkms

Post-transaction hooks will take care of dkms install automatically.

I guess the freezing was because of wayland on the Geforce 9400 GT is my guess or as you say Nouveau?

My computer with GeForce GTX 550 Ti freezes even on xorg with the Nouveau driver. Of course, it’s difficult to say whether that is the case here, but it very well could be.

I have GTX 1060 6 GB on one of my systems and it seems to be okay. But i use nividia-dkms version.

Oh yes, my GTX 550 Ti works fine with the 340xx-dkms driver from the AUR. No freezes.
