created the file, restarted the session, but this didn’t change the font.

Since this didn’t work I reduced the system font size by one notch (i.e. 11→10 etc.) via system settings. Alas, I don’t know what the font was like 10 days ago, but to my eye the font face itself also changed. Or was it already Adwaita Sans (Regular) ?

Yes, Adwaita Sans Regular 11 was the default font after installation. I was wrong to believe others without verifying it. My apologies.
