After Meta’s latest move with AI and being just generally dumb dumb’s I finally chose to delete my account. Had been pondering that quite a while, although my main use of the Facebook was limited to keeping up to date about local events etc. but this latest ruse was something that broke the camel’s back.
I still use Facebook. I don’t use the A.I. feature. I’m only in groups that interest me deeply: Linux groups, PC groups, Music Creation groups, Local groups, My sports teams, etc. I don’t follow news sites, politicians, celebrities, etc. I only have close friends and some friends I’ve made online.
I don’t get political posts in my feed, or nonsense news. Go figure, it’s almost like Facebook is configurable, YOU make it how YOU want it to be.
I’m on Facebook too but not really for socializing, unless it’s with few non-tech friends who still think ‘terminal’ means the airport. Mostly, I’m there to follow my other hobbies and road cycling stuff. Yes, I run Linux and ride a road bike because clearly, I enjoy pain in both digital and physical form.
I have an account that I check from time to time. I keep considering getting rid of it. But there are a few peeps I am connected with on their thst I have no other contact info for. I guess I could give them my email and then delete my account…it has been easy to just open it once every few weeks and get caught up on things and then get very annoyed with the garbage on there and remind myself why I don’t look at it and close the tab
I deleted my account many years ago. My wife still has an account and will let me know if she sees anything on there that she thinks I should know about.
I use my mom’s FB account the one time a week I need to coordinate grocery shopping with my niece. (We live way out in the country – the trip to the local big-box store takes about 45 minutes one way.) Other than that, I try to avoid it as much as possible.
It’s has a type of control over people’s minds that makes it hard for people to break away. Kinda like having bad news every day with breaking stories . . . . every 5 minutes with 20 minutes of pharmaceutical commercials in between trying to sell you something with all the bad side effects you wouldn’t want or pay for. . . . . Ironic. . . .
It’s been some years since I removed myself from it. I fully relate with this.
A function of Meta/Facebook that’s often eye-opening, is its tracking of “Off-Facebook Activity”. For anyone still using Meta/Facebook, this is something you need to see.
Not when you configure it they way you want and are careful who you follow and what you click on.
Like I said above, I don’t see nonsense news, conspiracy theory bots, political posts, or misinformation on Facebook. Haven’t in years. Because I’m cognisant of how to use and configure it.
I admit I was not very conscientious of these things while using it but probably the best for a personality type like mine not to be on there lol I believe you are correct though and what you said… Big facts
