One word is not enough, but I will play. I remember back in the day when windows 95 was released to the public. In one word back then it was “monumental”. The os flew off the shelves as fast as stores could fill them. Much has changed since then. For one the public is much more tech savvy, and many can see what windows really is. Nevertheless, today, it still retains a large market share, and many have to use it, so in one word for some, “necessary” seems appropriate. For others though, it’s, “expedient”, and for others still, an “intermediary”, as some recognize it for what it is, and it becomes a stepping stone to something better.

A word? Perhaps, “different”. More so than Apple’s macOS, because the OS was designed to be different from UNIX. I tend to agree with @sempterobit in terms of the system being a stepping stone, but I would add that it’s a source of inspiration for developers on other platforms too.

Profitable.
I had a colleague some 20 years ago when I was ranting against Windows, joking about their failing copy protections, he explained that it was on purpose, so that kids copy the software illegally but grow up using Office products and as adults want to apply their knowledge, so they become customers.
It was eye-opening back then.

(missed out on Windows 8)
I have tried Windows 8 and it has been my daily driver for a good while. It’s Windows 7, with a weird, new interface that can be completely ignored. Weird will be the best way to describe it.
Look at how they handle students, and it becomes very clear…
