Experience with Tuxedo Computer

Hello Forum,

I installed EOS on my new Tuxedo laptop. It works great. As this is a not so often used used hardware, I want to ask, if there are people here having experience with that hardware.

The laptop works great. But there are some (minor) aspects I am looking for:

  1. the battery always loads up to 100%, which might not be healthy for it. The standard tools found in the EOS packages there does not seem to be a way to control this - they complain about missing interface
  2. there are some packages related to Tuxedo in the AUR:

BUT: which of them do I need or makes sense?
  1. I found some older posts in the forum (and I will go through them once more). There are some DKMS-kernel mentioned. From my old(!) knowledge these are special moduls which have to be specially compiled and integrated into the boot process. Is this done, when the kernel is updated (this is done with dracut)? What happens, if the updated DKMS-moduls are not there? I don`t want the end with a system that needs a lot of hand work to be done for each update.

Sorry for all these questions. But regarding this topic I am a newbe - and I want to ask for some help/input here.

PS: if additional info regarding the system is required I will provide

Depending on model - you likely do not need any of them.

I use a Tuxedo Infinitibook Pro 14 gen8 (i7-13700H) - everything is supported - even touchpad switching on/off.

@joekamprad bought a Tuxedo laptop recently too - https://opencollective.com/endeavouros/updates/a-detailed-report-about-the-last-hardware-purchase-and-other-news

Hello,

Thank you for your reply. In fact I got to this point when I tried to use/set up a Gnome Extension (“I think it was Battery Health Charging” - unfortunately, I am not at the Tuxedo a.t.m.) which complained about missing interface or device. So, I looked around for special Tuxedo drivers.

A lot of things are working out of the box, that is right. But Health Charging sounds good to me (better than loading up to 100% at the docking station). Maybe I will look for another Extension/tool.

[*] BTW: it is an Infinity Pro 14 Gen 9 AMD - so, not so far away from yours.

I am using an Tuxedo Sirius 16 Gen1 and after nearly one year everything works out of the box , except I have to use a modded ucm2/HDA/HiFi-analog.conf to trigger both speaker sets with master volume switch, and an AUR packet to get fingerprint reader to work.
From Tuxedo I only have the Control Center and the driver packet installed.
Limit Battery charging can be enabled directly in the Bios

That’s only visible for contributors
But yes i just came back from holidays with the tuxedo, the devices are absolute beasts on performance, no question.
Mine is the All AMD TUXEDO Pulse 14 Gen3 v: Version 1.0 specs

i do like the tuxedo center and using the dkms drivers are not needed but useful also for full support of some things:
yay -S tuxedo-control-center-bin tuxedo-drivers-dkms

And yea everything is working perfectly fine running EndeavourOS, all the function keys do not need any extra setup.
Touchpad can be switched on/of with a key etc… You can control keyboard LED screen-brightness … Hibernation and sleep do work out of the box…

I run KDE and use Plymouth for a smooth boot experience showing tuxedo logo and EndeavourOS splash … But mainly to have a nice looking prompt to insert encryption passphrase.

Only thing i do not really like on using it is that it does not feel really robust… More fragile as i would like it… so that i feel needed to use protection when i move it outside.

But what i do like is the performance, hardware sided all is working together like a clockwork. Only the price is still not really in competition with brands on the market.

Gaming seems to be a very good experience on my device too… i almost se no smallest issue with what i tried… (not a gamer that much  ) but GTA no problem… with highest settings. It gets hot, and you may not want to leave it on the sofa, better to allow some airflow and set in tuxedo center to blow harder.

yes Bios have some really usefull settings… like on mine you can set amount of RAM for igpu too

Regarding the battery. Take a look here: https://www.tuxedocomputers.com/en/Infos/Help-Support/Frequently-asked-questions/What-is-Flexicharger-.tuxedo

Hello @joekamprad,

Thank you for your reply.

That is the Control Center they provide with their own Tuxedo OS. I am not sure if I like it (KDE) but maybe I will try it (my hope; adjustment of battery possible ).

I will try the DKMS and see, how it works. Anything to keep in mind with DKMS? Just install and update with yay when a new version is available? (It’s a long time back, that I was dealing with external kernel modules).

This is another thing I was thinking of (posted another topic here in the forum about that). I do not need a nice theme or picture/logo. But the font size is really small.

The Infinity Pro 14 case seems to be really robust (but I have not performed a hard test so far ) - I would compare to an old MacBook Pro from 2012 I have here. The performance of the machine is really good (I would like to do smaller FEA on it as I would like to develop software for that).

Regarding the price: the laptop before was/is still a Lenovo ThinkPad - the price was equally high. It is about 10 years old now and still running. If the Tuxedo will run for 10+ years, it is worth the price, I think.

it is what they provide on TuxedoOS but installed on EndeavouOS from AUR… same as the driver dkms package… dkms version will build the driver/modules against all installed kernels and will make sur eto do so on every kernel update automatically too. so no need for any extra steps after initial build/install.

lets hope for the best… from hardware specs it could do so… same for me i have a ver yold thinkpad used before T60 with upgraded CPU RAM and switched to ssd.

yea also a concern is the screen resolution without scaling everything is very small … i found a way to set things to scale properly… sddm Desktop and also the prompt on boot is okay now… systemd-menu is like little withe dots by default… so i do simple hide it same for boot log with Plymouth i can switch to see it by pressing esc key.

So yea i can recommend setting up Plymouth. If you want that i can guide…

Ah. That sounds great! Just installing and the forget - dracut does the rest. Exactly what I like  (BTW: I thought/hoped it would be like that - but before shooting in the foot …).

I guess I will give it a try. Maybe, looking for another solution (Gnome Extension or low level program first) - I like to avoid AUR, if possible.

Thank you, @joekamprad For the moment it works (I know, what to do when). So, far I have not used Plymouth - as boot screen is not important to me. But as said, it may be useful e.g. when booting from snapshot.

So, maybe I come back on you - first I will read about it and see.

Hello Forum,

short update: I installed these two packages from AUR:

yay -S tuxedo-drivers-dkms tuxedo-control-center-bin

The Tuxedo Control Center works as well as the Gnome Extension Battery Health Charging are working (after reboot and activation of the user for Health Charging).

  • Control Center does not give so much additional information compared to Conky (occupying a whole window); defining and changing profiles may be a feature to think about
  • Battery Health Charging is activated for now (profile “max. Life Time” = keeping battery between 20 and 80% charge); adjusting these level possible?

So I will see, if I will keep both. But for the moment: all seems to work.

Thank you all for your help,
Photor

TUXEDO person here. Happy to hear you enjoy your new hardware. :slightly_smiling_face:

That’s not what it is intended for. The main purpose is controlling your device, not looking at fancy sys stats.
I personally don’t use the TCC. I configured it once on all my devices according to my needs and never touched it again. On some machines I don’t have it running via autostart.

Hello @vinzv,

I think I will experiment a little bit with it (profiles, settings etc) and the see, if I can remove it again. I will not autostart something like that at all.

Update: today morning the battery was loaded 100%; laptop was on docking station the whole night. Looks as if this does not work as expected.

Edit (2025-01-21): since some time I see some strange behaviour of the LED near power button:

  • usually it is white when starting the laptop
  • it is red when charging
  • NOW I sometimes end up with a LED that
    • steady red for ~1 sec
    • fast flicker for ~1 sec
I do not know what this means or if it is dangerous (laptop works).
I am in contact with Tuxedo support to find the reason.

Hi!.

Can you tell me about the modified HiFi-analog.conf modifications?
What AUR package did you use to enable the fingerprint reader?

Thanks!

Hi sure, for fingerprint support I use this https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/libfprint-goodix-60c2 and the conf file https://github.com/alsa-project/alsa-ucm-conf/pull/410/commits/f7575957c6966590b71b231e95a015fcc280e548
And welcome to this great forum
