Ethernet-to-USB Adapter

Hello guys,

I want to connect to internet using Ethernet-to-USB adapter because my laptop doesn’t have ethernet port. My wifi is working fine, I just want to see if I can get better speed with the ethernet adapter.

Problem is it doesn’t show anything when I plugged the adapter.
Is there anything I need to download/configure for this?

Thank you.

usually, they work straight away. but I also have had a model which did not work,
You could try another or use lsusb to investigate.

Okay, so earlier I plugged it in the USB 3.0 port, when I type lsusb it doesn’t show on the list.

But now I plugged it in the only USB 2.0 port and it works.

I don’t really know how it differs. I just assume that USB 3.0 is just faster, but apparently that’s not the case.

Thanks for helping!

Usually, plugging a USB2 device into a USB3 port “just works”. Occasionally, however, you run into a combo where it refuses to see the device (certain iPod models have this issue, as well). At that point, you can either plug the device into a USB2 port or into a USB2 hub plugged into the USB3 port.

Also, if you are concerned about transfer speeds, I’d pick up a USB3 Ethernet adapter or a USB3 hub containing an Ethernet port.

That is mostly true - if both host and device support that protocol.
What speed do you expect? Cheap usb-ethernet connectors normally support 100 Mbps connection and USB 2.0 can go up to 480 Mbps. For full gigabit ethernet you would need USB 3 and higher.
