Error with yay

Recently I had an issue with updates not being installed due to a commit error, I was able to solve it. See my post here. Now when I try to run yay I get this error:

yay: error while loading shared libraries: libalpm.so.15: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I tried using the solution someone posted here. But when I try to make the package I get this error:

error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
yay-debug: /usr/lib/debug/usr/bin/yay.debug exists in filesystem (owned by yay-git-debug)
Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.

==> WARNING: Failed to install built package(s).

Not sure how to proceed from here, any help would be appreciated!

Have a look here and try these things first:

  1. sudo pacman -S rate-mirrrors
rate-mirrors arch --max-delay 7200 | sudo tee /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
  2. sudo pacman -Syu

Tried running both, here are the results:

[rudy@rodolfo-latitude7490 ~]$ sudo pacman -S rate-mirrrors

Ok. You might go here and generate a https + IPv4 mirrorlist:
https://archlinux.org/mirrorlist/

Then edit the contents of /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist and completely replace its contents with that generated mirrorlist:

sudo nano /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

Or to simply grab all mirrors, you could run this:

wget https://archlinux.org/mirrorlist/all/https/ -O mirrorlist && sudo cp mirrorlist /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

Okay, making some progress here. I went ahead an grabbed all mirrors using the command you posted. Got all the way to sudo pacman -Syu and got this error:

You might try @xircon 's suggestion in your other thread, to address that.

Just a note though, these “... exists in filesystem” errors should not occur under normal circumstances.

It essentially means these files got here without the Arch package management system knowing about it. That is, something else put them there.

That might be the user (yourself), or other package management tools, like Node’s npm, or Python’s pip (as common examples).

Oh, that sounds.. concerning. Should I be doing something about that? Like remove them. Thanks for the suggestion, I went ahead and did that and it worked kinda. Still can’t run yay but was able to run sudo pacman -Syu

You would know best (hopefully :sweat_smile:) why those files were put there in a manner that the Arch package management system was unaware of. Do you have any thoughts there? Restoring a backup? Using non-Arch package management tools? …etc

What does this output?

sudo pacman -Q | grep yay

Run:

sudo pacman -S yay

And replace yay-git with yay.

Alright, replaced yay-git and ran yay with no issues. Just saw your edit on a previous comment and yes Python’s pip is a constant source of small headaches heh

Ah good.

You can use -git versions of packages, but you need to remember that updating them isn’t automatic, you need to explicitly update those packages. These are typically not release versions, so you would also expect bugs. I’d suggest sticking to the release packages (yay) unless you’re pretty savvy with those things.

If using yay to update, you can instruct it to update development packages such as that, using:

yay --devel

They’re otherwise overlooked.

If you have rate-mirrors now properly installed, I’d also suggest running these two commands to speed test the Arch and EndeavourOS mirrors and update both files accordingly:

rate-mirrors --disable-comments-in-file --protocol=https arch --max-delay 7200 --completion=1 | sudo tee /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

rate-mirrors --disable-comments-in-file --protocol=https endeavouros  | sudo tee /etc/pacman.d/endeavouros-mirrorlist

xterm package somehow loosing pacman db connection..
