EOS theme broken in SDDM greeter?

Just updated my Plasma/Wayland install and the SDDM greeter is broken. Instead of the regular EOS themed greeter, I am dropped in the unstyled greeter and I get an almost fullscreen virtual keyboard. Quite unsettling on a 32" desktop screen. Although I can type my password on the screen and log in, there is no password field visible and there is no feedback.

I poked around, remove InputMethod=qtVirtualKeyboard from the /etc/sddm.conf.d/10-endeavouros.conf

Now I get the unstyled greeter screen, I can see the password field, log in, etc.

There is also an error:

The current theme cannot be loaded due to the errors below, please select another theme.

file:///usr/share/sddm/themes/eos-breeze/Main.qml:305:9 VirtualKeyboardLoader is not a type

So… since everything was hunky dory until the update, my guess there is a bug in the eos-breeze theme. Or is it just me?

Same behavior and error message here. Not just you.

I used the KDE Settings to select the default KDE greeter. That works fine for me. I do have to remove qtvirtualkeyboard as inputmethod, otherwise it will default to that regardless what greeter I pick.

Leave

InputMethod=

in the config and not commented out, just empty.

I ran into the same issue! I managed to fix it by changing the SDDM greeter theme back to Breeze and rebooting.

The theme worked, but the virtual keyboard was taking up half the screen. I fixed that after logging in by disabling the input method completely:

sudo tee /etc/sddm.conf.d/99-no-virtual-keyboard.conf >/dev/null <<'EOF'
[General]
InputMethod=
EOF

My wife got the same problem, also using sddm.

I am using plasma login manager and got no problem at all whilst also using eos breeze theme.

same thing just happened to me as well, @Biotico1974 solution fixed the virtual keyboard jumscare but everything else is still default

Can confirm the same thing, but also mildly annoying, since I’m using a Thinkpad Yoga, so the need to remove the virtual keyboard for login is a bit annoying… even if I didn’t actually use it.

I did try to sync the KDE settings to SDDM but it still has the same problem. No other errors were listed.

EDIT: @Biotico1974’s did remove the virtual keyboard, but the error persists on my end as well.

I edited made a backup, and then “/usr/share/sddm/themes/eos-breeze/Main.qml” and removed the VirtualKeyboardLoader code block.

I also did what muvvenby suggested here before I did anything else. Not sure if it was needed or not though.

EDIT: This is the code block I removed.

    VirtualKeyboardLoader {
        id: inputPanel

        z: 1

        screenRoot: root
        mainStack: mainStack
        mainBlock: userListComponent
        passwordField: userListComponent.mainPasswordBox
    }

This helped me:

sudo pacman -Syu plasma-login-manager
sudo systemctl disable sddm
sudo systemctl enable plasmalogin
sudo pacman -Rn sddm-kcm sddm eos-breeze-sddm

I will have look on the weekend, basically we have switched to plm for plasma KDE.

But I check if I can fix it anyway.

hi,

Same over here. imho this has a link to plasma 6.8 … my vm is borked and booted into firmware
Hopefully the developers will respond as of plasma 6.8 is wayland only

Getting this exact error after updating to plasma 6.8 and removing X11

No immediate rush, but thanks for getting on top of it regardless. I was able to solve it by loading KDE’s Breeze theme, and that seems to have stopped SDDM from complaining for now. Looking forward to a fix when it is available.

Even more worrying. On first startup after upgrading plasma, sddm was bypassed entirely and logged in without a password on my system!
It fixed itself and worked next boot though, but still… :grimacing:

Thx, This solved the problem for me.

I did this as well, but the big virtual keyboard still pops up till i minimize it. How do you stop the big virtual keyboard from loading altogether?

Thanks!

Biotico1974’s suggestion worked for me

Okay, that makes sense. I must have missed the big announcement/breaking changes post that relayed that information though. I just updated before leaving at work and saw the broken SDDM theme (I always reboot instead of shut down after an update even though it’s not necessary), which I filed away as “problems for next week”.

It would have been nice to be at least warned about the change from SDDM to Plasma Login Manager and it probably would be a good idea to eventually post a guide on how to do so because this clearly is a switch you have to do manually. And while I am pretty confident I am able to do so since I have switched out LightDM to SDDM on a vanilla Arch laptop in the past, this is not something super straightforward to every single user.

That all said, it happens. I agree with FlameSoulis that it’s not extremely urgent since it’s more annoying than a breaking bug (you can still log in, it just doesn’t look the best). Hopefully you can still enjoy your weekend.

This worked for me too!

Side note - If you aren’t deleting SDDM, make sure to delete the SDDM User as it says in the Arch wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Plasma_Login_Manager

userdel -r sddm

Thank you @igorrr worked perfectly! :+1:
