Cinnamon offers a Waylad session, though it says “Experimental.” Any of you EOS Cinnamon users using the Wayland session? I have been for the last week. I haven’t done any gaming via Steam yet, I’ll probably attempt that over the weekend. But for my day-to-day use (YouTube, web browsing, listening to music through Elisa and Fooyin, documents…), so far I’ve not had any issues at all.
Cinnamon user. X11 as far as I know. Does Endeavour offer a Wayland Version? Fairly new install and didn’t notice if I had the option. I guess I can do it all thru repo /extra?
I always hear a handful of negative things about Wayland-in-Any-DE-in-any-DISTRO so I am always Pavlovian-believing that there are kinks to work out and news always seems to be ‘not ready for primetime.’
Don’t know what to believe that’s how bad and varied linux messaging is. You make it sound like day-to-day is fine so that’s hopeful. See a lot of that in articles.
Also I also hear that one’s hardware has a lot to do with Wayland success and mine is an old bag o bones rig, but fast and reliable.
For every post like yours that says its all cool so far…I see another one that cancels that out and describes it as a wrecking ball. It’s maddening to know anything about Wayland with any certainty to me.
So why is that I wonder? (rhetorical question I guess)
I don’t think it has anything to do with Endeavour. It’s Cinnamon specific. Login window, click the cinnamon logo for a dropdown. Wayland is a choice.
For me, my day-to-day is fine. Sure… hardware, video card and such are variables to consider. But in my case, all is well so far.
My EOS KDE install was Wayland for 6 months without issue. My Arch KDE install has been Wayland since I installed it on my laptop a month ago. No issues.
Updated my OP to reflect my system
I would say this is because what it is classed as in their releases and nothing to do with its stabilty. It is a testing ground aimed at getting things stable.
Just happened to run updates this morning on 2 different machines and noticed Wayland listed. Don’t know if it was new or just updating. Checked System Info
and both say using X11. Since all works fine, I’m not going to change anything, but at least I now know that it is there and available.
interesting, i was thinking about trying cinnamon again. might do so now if wayland works pretty well
