EOS boot fails, goes to BIOS

Not sure what category to post this in as not sure what the problem is. I’m guessing a kernel issue could be involved, but not certain so I’ll just post it here.
For some time I’ve been installing EOS on older laptops for individuals with disabilities. It’s worked pretty well. Recently someone who can’t hear handed me such a computer, a Dell Latitude E5430 that I installed Endeavor on over a year ago. My sign language is rudimentary, so communication is lacking, but what I gathered is he tried to update the computer, which he does at least weekly, but instead of rebooting, the Dell logo appears and a firmware message appears. Clicking Enter the Dell logo appears once more and boots into the BIOS. There it remains.
I remember a similar scenario from last summer, so I thought to try a similar fix and chroot into the OS. I booted from an older EOS 23 USB stick I had handy. Either lsblk or fdisk -l shows the expected devices. Trying to mount by
sudo mount /dev/sda2 /mnt yields mount: /mnt: unknown filesystem type ‘ext4’.
arch-chroot at the moment doesn’t seem a possibility.

Would anyone have a clue as to what happened or how to proceed?

Most likely they encountered this issue which means they had not updated in nearly a year.

What is EOS 23?

Can you share the full input and output from the commands so we can help troubleshoot?

Very sorry if confusing. When I posted the above yesterday I was in the middle of doing a lot of other stuff and didn’t go into detail. Thought I’d just get the ball rolling but apologies if that wasn’t the thing to do. Anyway, now I have a little more time. @dalto, EOS 23 I just read from what was printed on the USB stick. Should have been EOS 23-1, the month it was created. Today I created a USB with the latest Endeavor version to see if that would help. It did. I was able to use arch-chroot.

[root@EndeavourOS /]# stat -c %w /
2023-01-08 08:59:46.000000000 -1000

tells me that I installed Endeavour January this year. So “The latest grub package update…” couldn’t be the issue.
Also:

[root@EndeavourOS /]# update-grub
bash: update-grub: command not found

[root@EndeavourOS /]# pacman -Ss grub
core/grub 2:2.06.r499.ge67a551a4-1

would indicate grub is not even installed. Perhaps the January 2003 release used system-boot. I’m not up to date on system-boot but need to be, so help is appreciated. From chroot I can’t determine whether system-boot might be active:

[root@EndeavourOS /]# systemctl --state=active
Running in chroot, ignoring command 'list-units'

If I could determine if system-boot was in use as boot loader, then I might want to shine the light in that direction for troubleshooting.
Here is some more stuff to look at:

Hope this can narrow things down a bit.
Thanks!

Oh, if you are using systemd-boot, check this from a chroot:

pacman -Qq | grep "^linux"

If it returns one or more kernel packages, try running reinstall-kernels from the chroot.

This was the result of that. It seemed lots of packages couldn’t be installed:

[root@EndeavourOS /]# pacman -Qq | grep "^linux"
linux
linux-api-headers
linux-firmware
linux-firmware-whence
linux-headers
linux-zen
linux-zen-headers

That output is all normal. It is just telling you what modules it is skipping. This is generally because they aren’t needed.

Try rebooting.

Unfortunately booting still fails. As before, the Dell logo appears, then in the middle of a black screen is the message “Reboot Into Firmware Interface”. Hitting “Enter” the Dell logo again appears, and then the BIOS.
If you have any ideas, for example, how to restart system-boot services, I will give it a try. Else I am thinking of trying to re-install using the new release.

When you created the chroot, did you properly mount mount the EFI partition at /mnt/efi?

No, I did not. What is the best way of going about doing that?

Can you share the output of sudo parted -l so we can see your disk layout?

First mount /dev/sda2 at /mnt then mount /dev/sda1 at /mnt/efi. Then do sudo arch-chroot /mnt

Then run reinstall-kernels from the chroot.

It didn’t work last time because your EFI partition wasn’t mounted so the files were written to the wrong partition.

Nice! It worked, and saves me the time of a re-install. I’m happy! Just two more questions:

  1. Is there anything else I could do from the main install while I have the computer in front of me? I already updated the system.
    and
  2. Any idea what might have brought on this problem so we can avoid it down the road?

Again thanks!

If you have already updated the system that is the most important thing.

It is hard to say what caused it without seeing the output from the update but in most cases it is caused by starting the update and stopping it before it finishes. Typically by powering off or rebooting while the update is running.
