This happens at startup and seemingly randomly while the laptop is on, the programs that open are:
shutdown menu
Firefox
audio control panel
shortcut guide
xfce terminal.
Is there a log of some sort I can look at for an answer this is the first time I dont know what is causing the bug which makes it hard to search for people with similar issues.
Also this only started happening recently I have checked the I3 config and it shouldn’t do this.
I don’t use I3 however I would start at the usual suspects places like
~/.config/autostart
/etc/xdg/autostart
and any autostart files that I3 may have.
EosI3 does use dex. Is an xdg autostart program
Dex is a royal PITA.
Check your i3 config and see if you have a line similar to this:
exec --no-startup-id dex -a
If you have this line in your config, it will autostart any application that has a .desktop
file in your autostart directories.
I have commented this out but it doesn’t seem to change anything. This also happens randomly through out the run time so I don’t think that it is a startup program. Is there anyway I could get more information about what might be causing this?
Can you describe this in a little bit more detail? For example, did these random application launches occur when you were typing something on the keyboard? If they did, then it is possible that you had triggered multiple keybindings when you were typing.
Provide as much detail as possible. That would help us narrow down the cause.
Edit: Also post your i3 config if you don’t mind.
It just happened, I was browsing a thread and it just happened. I don’t think I was even pressing a key on my keyboard.
I really dont know how I are something I changed could be causing this, I expect its maybe a program running in the background reloading or updating.

What application was launched? Are you using a laptop? Were you using the touch pad when it happened? Did you have touchpad/mouse gestures setup with libinput (if you do, then you will find that this file ~/.config/libinput-gestures.conf
exists in your home directory).
I am using a laptop to be specific a EliteBook 8470p.
As for gestures I dont have this file and never added any so unless it comes with the default install no.
I mean which application was launched when it just happened before you replied to my comment. All of those applications were simultaneously launched?
The same applications everytime over multiple workspace, they start 1 after another but I expect thats just my laptop loading them in.
Edit Thunar also launches.
Every time this happened, were the applications launched in the exact same order? Or was the order random?
Same order every time, and also same workspace but that’s because firefox will automatically get opened in workspace 2 and thunar in workspace 3 and so it changes the focused workspace.
Very interesting indeed. Can you go through the journal logs and check the entries around the time the issue occured? You can access the journal entries for the current boot with:
$ journalctl -b 0
Edit: You don’t have to post the whole thing, just narrow down to the timestamp when the applications launched themselves.
Firefox is set to start…
Indeed. But that will only run the first time the user boots into the system. The config uses exec
, not exec_always
. If exec_always
was used, the apps would launch every time the user restarts i3. The user claimed that the apps launched themselves during normal usage, not just at boot.
# bind program to workspace and focus to them on startup:
assign [class="Xfce4-terminal"] $ws1
assign [class="(?i)firefox"] $ws2
assign [class="Thunar"] $ws3
assign [class="thunderbird"] $ws4
assign [class="TelegramDesktop"] $ws5
# automatic set focus new window if it opens on another workspace than the current:
for_window [class=Xfce4-terminal] focus
for_window [class=(?i)firefox] focus
for_window [class=Thunar] focus
for_window [class=Thunderbird] focus
for_window [class=TelegramDesktop] focus
# Autostart apps as you like
#exec --no-startup-id sleep 2 && xfce4-terminal
exec --no-startup-id sleep 7 && firefox https://github.com/endeavouros-team/endeavouros-i3wm-setup/blob/main/force-knowledge.md
#exec --no-startup-id sleep 3 && thunar
The config (used to anyway) autostarts the terminal, thunar, firefox, etc on assigned workspaces. Something very strange is going on lol.
Also, these lines aren’t actually necessary because i3
will automatically focus on newly opened windows if you just add this line to the config:
focus_on_window_activation focus
However, it is also possible that the OP only wants auto-focus for a specific set of applications, not all applications.
