If you’re new to linux. I’ld strongly suggest that you should test drive an distro which provides an Hyprland image first. I think Garuda Linux offers one which would work out of the box.
Otherwise, on Arch based Distros, the standard package management / installation method is via pacman or it’s helpers such as yay or paru. There are repositories for the standard Arch software packages. As well as the Archlinux User Repository (AUR) which are maintained by Arch users for a broader scope of software, which aren’t included by Arch itself.
You may wonder why I’m mentioning Arch a lot. As a matter of fact, Endeavour OS is distro-based on Arch Linux.
Just so you know, some dotfiles on GitHub are extremely broken and invasive. Perhaps install hyprdots yourself, it won’t be easy yes, new to Linux you are right ?
Try out archcraft free version , it has openbox for free version. A donation to the dev on ko-fi will get you sway+hyprland+etc. If you don’t wanna pay then just pick a distro which ships Hyprland as an ISO along with a cheatsheet.
Ty!!
I had previously used the dotfiles I mentioned earlier, and they worked perfectly. However, I found it strange that, after a while, they stopped working. I spent an entire day trying to find a solution, but unfortunately, I couldn’t fix it. So, my only option now is to switch to a different OS. For the moment, I’m installing Garuda, but I’m completely open to exploring other distro options if you have any suggestions!
Well I think EOS offers sway, sway is quite good as well and is based on wayland, wayfire is another good wm which is extremely simple to configure.
But with the statusbar and stuff, you gotta do it yourself.
So I would say Garuda Hyprland is fine if the theme suits you and you intend to do tid bid changes in the config. But too many changes may be extremely tough to do and you may end up breaking something.
Or else you can try sway editions of Garuda and EOS(I think there is one), they are pretty good and i3 wm configuration will easily get you through sway. Sway is meant to be feature compatible with i3 , another WM based on X11.
But Sway won’t get you those fancy effects that Hyprland will ! So choose carefully. Btw here is how one of my sway/i3 riced setup looked like:
I am an extreme noob when it comes to WMs but given how easy sway and i3 were, I was able to rice theme quite decently. I may share the rice files with you if you wish !
Optionally for i3, I used a forked version of a compositor named picom , the fork is pjulius picom. A compositor composes effects and all those shiny great effects you see on the screen. It will get you good animations, but sometimes may require some fixing.
The easy yet useful way would be SwayFX !
A fork of Sway which adds some nice effects, currently not as much as picom but it is a nice addition. I may help you with picom if you choose i3 but remember I am a noob so it may be a bit of testing back n forth to get things working. The repository is incomplete since I have abandoned it for now but I am willing to give you personal assistance.
Sway and i3 both will get you to easily understand and configure your setup to a decently riced extent yourself , but in i3 , compositor setup is the tricky part.
Arco Linux actually provides customised and similar setups for pretty much every DE/WM/WC there is. However, there is a current issue with the Calamares installer which is making new installations take forever or even freeze, so I’m not sure if you’ll be able to install Garuda or Arco at the moment.
@SAM1 ,
ML4W version of hypland works alongside KDE but you have to select a font like Nimbus Mono PS for Konsole because ML4W hyprland spoils the default Plasma Konsole font. The safest way to install ML4W with EnOS No Destop option.
The mylinuxforwork hyprland installation begins with
git clone https://github.com/mylinuxforwork/dotfiles.git
cd dotfiles/
./setup-arch.sh
I would suggest selecting the rolling release and mostly the default options.
