Empty Pockets

This was just announced…
Pocket is closing down. Is this another sign that Mozilla are really struggling these days?
I know some folks don’t like Pocket but I’ve used it for years, in fact I think I first downloaded it on my HTC Desire phone, which feels like hundreds of years ago.

I mean. That good old Google money was gonna give out eventually. And they pretty much exclusively make poor choices. It was kind of inevitable.

I might tend to assume it just means what it says..

They realized it was not that valuable to them or their users .. and that trend was only continuing as, quote, “the way people save and consume content on the web has evolved”.

I dont know about all that .. my habits have stayed roughly the same for decades, but I might also think that fresh-faced teens arent likely either to use some third-party service for … ‘saving bookmarks and generating suggestions’? I dunno, maybe if it was some behemoth that was a default utility in the majority of phones (think gsuite or similar), but otherwise there would probably not be a huge, let alone growing, interest.

As alluded to on the page as well - its not like mozilla is out of the content suggestion game. They still do it a number of ways in the browser. Such as the welcome page. Combine this with profiles and syncing and something standing alone to the side doing a similar thing like “Pocket” appears somewhat redundant.

Ha, yes, making poor choices does seem to be their thing these days. Shame really.

I hear you there my friend, I’m such a creature of habit when it comes to computer/internet related stuff.
I can’t say I’ve ever used the “suggestions” side of Pocket but yep, you’re right, I guess it’s just become an outdated way of doing things. I’ve just added the"Reading List" extension to Firefox and it will definitely suit my needs.

one of the first 2 things I disable immediately in any Firefox install (when I used Firefox). It’s the worst kind of program and scary and repulsive…you consent to let them dictate your taste for you thru AI and guesswork…insulting and reckless.
Good riddance.
Any program that pretends to know you is unsettling.

Interestingly, they have been focusing more on the browser lately, bringing in/back things people have been asking for. Plenty of questionable things mixed in as well, but on a whole the focus seems to be back. The question is, is it too little too late.

too little too late for me since they fell asleep on security. Librewolf and Mullvad do the heavy lifting for me lately since it became way too about:config intensive to counter all the nonsense. As for their features I never cared since most were invasive.
It’s a great browser once you take a lot of time to dial it in… Didn’t have the time these days…

Is this going to turn into yet another “my browser is better than your browser” thread? Just what the world needs.

Good riddance. I have never trusted the purpose and intent behind Pocket.

This is a sad day for me. I’ve used Pocket since it was an Firefox addon called ReadItLater, and loved the integration with Kobo eReaders.

I happily paid the annual subscription, and would have paid more to support Mozilla. I get that they’re reviewing their services in case the Google money is cut off, but they also risk losing some of what makes them unique. I’m trying out Vivaldi for the first time in a while and really liking it.

For me, it’s recommendations have been mostly :united_states: articles that I have no interest in as a :united_kingdom: . I’ve only ever clicked on 3 to 4 a year, and mostly happily ignored them.

Poor choices but still the only browser that is not just a Chromium skin and works on Linux better than any other.

Thank you for the wallabag links @shuvashish76 :+1: There is also a Kobo client available - https://gitlab.com/anarcat/wallabako so I may pay and start using wallabag.

Vivaldi is good and what I’ll switch to if losing the Google money kills off Mozilla, but Firefox is still best for me.

Also an official Wallabag plugin (installed by default) if you use KOReader.

Hadn’t heard of it. Looks interesting…

It’s quite popular among e-ink readers community due to written in lua language which means highly configurable
Do try it: installation for kobo or 1st try the AppImage on Desktop/Android version.
