I liked audacious for the 2 weeks I used it but in my case it could NEVER see my external drive where the bulk of my music is.
Dealbreaker.

Headphones are the answer (+USB DAC.+headphone amplifier) 
Cmus is a nice music player, I’m still using a graphical one, Deadbeef.

You are right. I do need to get a DAC and some decent headphones.
